I generally find this type of "goodbye" post annoying at best, and I won't be posting one elsewhere, but I figured that since I've been an active moderator in C&E for almost two years, I should let you all know where I've gone.

Quite simply, I don't have time to continue moderating. I'm currently studying femtosecond laser filamentation in graduate school, and although I do have free time, I don't have enough to spend it in a moderating role.

I've really enjoyed posting here, and I've often wished I could spend my time responding in threads rather than dealing with reports and discussing rules.

So there it is -- no scandal or drama I'm afraid. I hope this forum continues to foster constructive debate without allowing the extremes of either side (as we all know there are many sites where you can bash one group or the other).

I wonder where you're studying. I went to U of R, and their optics program is quite good. There are only a few other schools that I can think of in the U.S. that would offer something like that.

I'm studying at a primarily undergraduate school -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana. I skipped a couple grades in high school, and I just wasn't ready to jump headlong into a top-rate grad program, though it's certainly a top-rate undergrad school. After a year and a half for an optics degree, I'm planning to work off some debt for a year or so and then go to one of the six Optics schools in the US (looking most seriously at Rochester and Colorado actually).

And Jet -- yes, it's pretty "easy" to you amazing theoretical folks, but I'd much rather sit in a lab playing with lasers and making things work. Right now I'm working on a MatLab model of the filament -- again not so difficult as it's been done before -- but I would MUCH rather spend my time in a lab than at a computer. Anyway it's only a 1.5-year engineering degree, not quite what I'd choose for Ph.D work, but not at all boring.

After all your answers, I feel even more like saying "goodbye" was a mistake. Even if it's sincere, it's too much like asking for praise to me. "unfortunately" I can't close the thread but it doesn't matter much I suppose.

Yeah, I'll be around, but probably only as much as Jet Black these days .

So far "time" and the newbie "luvee" are the only ones to disclose dad's departure and they both sound a lot like "you know who" to me so it may not be such a mystery why "they" are the only ones who seem to know anything about it. In fact when time chimed in on the radioactive dating thread I finally remembered where I had heard that good old "granny spec" nonsense before.
