  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey all,
I just have to vent. I just found out today that after next tuesday we are not able to carry backpacks in school anymore, AT ALL!! This is Highschool consisting of(at least for me) 2 textbooks and 3 binders a day! That means i have to carry all that for ONE day! Yes there are lockers but we dont get to pick what locker we have, and the HS is ENSANELY huge!!!!! Only 6 min passing periods no time to use restroom, get drink and be on class on time if i had to run to my locker, its bad enough that this is Swoosh's school too, he has bad back problems so it doesnt help him much. Please give your input on this. We cant have backpacks anymore!!!! That is so wrong!!

Are you in a public or Catholic school? When I went to Catholic jr high school I don't think we were allowed back packs, (my memory isn't that good) but I think that had something to do with bags cluttering up the aisles...

Out of curiousity, why aren't you allowed bags? Is your school that violent that teachers fear kids carting around weapons in their bag?

It is a public highschool and they are doing this bc two students stole computer parts during lunch due to the failure of a teacher not locking her door like she was supposed to. BUT the items got returned unharmed. So from next week on out we cant have backpacks, so swoosh and i have decided that we will carry our bags on one shoulder, so if any assistant principals write us they cant, bc it is not a BACK pack cuz it doesnt lay on our back! It is rediculous though. It is also said that the story will be on the local news!

Wow. Yeah, that's not really very intelligent unless they give you another reasonable option. Some ideas for how to protest:
Petitions (use formal wording, and keep it polite)
Letters in the school paper
Maybe write a letter for parents and hand them out to students to take to their parents (stamps can be expensive). Make sure in this letter you sound mature and emphasize how this policy interferes with student's learning.
Write a letter to your city's local newspaper editorial column.

If you try any of these, be careful to be polite, and keep in mind that the school probably thinks that they are helping students. Try and find out what their reasoning is so you can argue that the bad effects outweigh the good.

Of course, these are all a lot of effort & will take a lot of time. You probably don't feel that strongly about this, especially since you might be graduating soon. If you do feel strongly, though, try & find other students who do and get together for at least a couple of hours a week to work on the things above (and any other ideas you come up with). It will work better if you are organized about it, and (like so many things in life) you can't do it alone. And if you are polite about it, the school may actually approve of what you are doing - working to affect policy is a very adult thing when done maturely.

Good luck!

Jumping on the old fogey bandwagon. When *I* was in school, I carried my books, binders, and papers with me. Carried my first 4 classes before lunch and the last three after. Usually, 3 to 4 books with attendant binders/folders. *shrug* Had seven classes. *sigh* progress. Oh yeah! Walked to school five miles; uphill BOTH ways! ROFL j/k

Have your parents schedule a conference with the principal NOW. This is insane behavior on the school's part--most schools at least allow students to carry mesh or clear backpacks (those fall apart after about a month but they're better than nothing).

Old fogeys: trust me, today's textbooks are murderously heavy--students don't need to be carrying them at all, but a bookbag is better than having them in your hands. I used to have to carry some of my textbooks in my hands because they were so big and heavy, they couldn't fit in my bag, and even if they could have fit, the combined weight would have thrown me backwards like a turtle. (Yes, I'm a weakling. There, I said it. ;) )

In college I once had a biology textbook that was so heavy, I honestly couldn't lift it. I had to call a friend to carry it home for me (THAT was an embarrassing cell phone call, yikes). And for the rest of the semester, I couldn't take it to class--I had to leave it on my desk in my room. Pathetic.

Get a rolling metal cart. The kind that is used for toting luggage.

Make a wooden "base platform", so nothing falls through the hole of the metal framework.
Then, to "stick it" to the school admininstration, stick a license plate on it. :)

Or...

get a litttle red wagon, put a "Taxi" sign on it, and offer to carry other kids' books for a fee.

Can you at least take it to school and leave it in your locker? I can understand them not wanting you to take them to class. I don't see why you would need to take your book bag to class. We are not allowed to (we are supposed to keep them in our lockers). They take up room in the aisle, people can steal stuff, and just think about concealed weapons. I don't see why you would need to take your bag to class. And personally, caring a bag on your BACK with all that stuff in it, how does that make it any better than carrying it in your arms?

One thing I hate more than almost anything else is when everyone has their rights taken away because of a few idiots who can't obey the rules.

AMEN!!! I wish the teachers and faculty saw it that way! Yes the books are HEAVY! Like one of Swoosh's books wont fit in his bag and litterally 10lbs!! It is rediculous that they pull this on us in a weeks timelimit! It is easy to say to keep everything in a locker but our school is so HUGE it is pretty close to the size of a large mall! It is a 5A school with over 1000 classrooms and over 10 different hallways containing lockers! Each hallway is divided by subject so it is hard and very unconveniant especially in a school with 2 floors.
