  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Selah did an amazing cover of a Country/Christian song by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, which when I first heard the song Bless The Broken Road in the 2000s, I never knew until this year it was a cover.

However, even to this day, this song makes me cry, as sometimes we have to go through tough moments in order to become closer to God. We are all broken people, but Jesus can bring us back to Him through His death and resurrection.

Bless The Broken Road Lyrics (1994 original, 2006 cover):

[Verse 1]
I set out on a narrow way
Many years ago
Hoping I would find true love
Along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign
Pointed straight to you

[Chorus]
Every long-lost dream
Led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart
They were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way
Into your loving arms
This much I know is true...
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

[Verse 2]
I think about the years I spent
Just passing through
I'd like to have the time I lost
And give it back to you!
But you just smile
And take my hand
You've been there
You understand
It's all part of a grander plan
That is coming true!

[Chorus]
Every long-lost dream
Led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart
They were like northern stars
Pointing me on my way
Into your loving arms
This much I know is true...
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you

[Verse 3]
Now I'm just rolling home
Into my lover's arms
This much I know is true...
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you
That God blessed the broken road
That lead me straight to you

You are welcome. The song does have a meaning, about finding the right partner, but, as I am single, I treat this song as finding a strong relationship with Jesus.

Back in the 2000s and early 2010s when this was on the Christian radio (98.5 FM KTIS), I wanted to tear up, and believe I did a few times, and still do to this day. Piano and slow ballads do that to me, especially songs with moving Christian lyrics.

Alright, here is the original, taking it back to 1994. :) Same lyrics as before, but sang by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Ah, 1980s-2000s ballads, my favorite style of slower music from that era.

Rascal Flatts also made a version of "Bless the Broken Road" in 2004. The Selah version is still my favorite, though the Rascal Flatts version is good. Also, Rascal Flatts had Christian band members:

Quote from Rascal Flatts Wikipedia: "DeMarcus moved to Nashville in 1992, earning his first record deal as part of a Christian group called East to West."

I think that the version of this song that I like best is the country twang of Rascal Flatts. I have been living waaay outside the city limits of a small town for almost 17 years. I'm pretty sure that God has turned this ol' man into a country boy!!

I like both the city, and the country, though the country is much more beautiful. For myself, I love the Selah version the best, but the Rascal Flatts has a good old-school country feel to it, back in the era before Taylor Swift and Florida Georgia Line turned country into generic pop. Luckily, country is starting to go back to its 20th century roots again (as in no Auto-Tune, minimal effects, and no drum machines) with newer crop of people such as Chris Stapleton and Zach Bryan.

Also, Rascal Flatts has a good secular song: "Life is a Highway" from 2006, and that song is ingrained in my childhood as the theme song for Pixar's Cars movie, which I watched as a 6-year-old in theaters.
