Age: Somehwere between 500 and 2,000 years old.

Appearance: Light brown hair that falls over his left eye. He is nearly blind in that eye. He wears a black kimono-esque outfit before becoming a Captain, in which he wears a traditional white cloak over his black kimono with the Gotei 13 symbol for Squad 3.
Bio: When he died, Nimaru was sent to the 29th District of Rukongai. Rukongai is the area outside Soul Society. The lower the number, the better the area is, with the worst district being 80, where people are fighting for their lives everyday, and small children are trampled beneath the feet of older souls.
Nimaru arrived with two of his friends, and they quickly discovered that they felt hunger, which was abnormal for spirits sent to Soul Society--it meant that they had spiritual powers, otherwise know as kido, and were able to use it. Shortly thereafter, they joined the Soul Reaper Academy, becoming trainees.
Nimaru was especially adept in both swordfighting and kido, and passed every excercise with flying colors, and was admitted to graduation in three years besides the normal six years. He was also scheduled to become a seated officer immediately.
And he did so, being placed as the 4th Seated officer of Squad 3, under Captain Gin Ichimaru and Assistant Captain Izuru Kira.
Then the unthinkable happened--Gotei 13 Captains Gin Ichimaru, Sosuke Aizen of Squad 5, and Kaname Tosen of Squad 9, revealed themselves to be traitors to Soul Society. Unable to strike his former Captain, Nimaru lowered his sword, and withdrew from the battle.
During a Gotei 13 Court Guard Captain meeting, the Assistant Captains of Squads 3, 5, and 9 banded together to decide who the new Captains should be. Izuru Kira was recommended for the position for being the Assistant Captain, but he refused--he instead recommended Nimaru.
And so it was decided. Nimaru would become the Captain of Squad 3, like that of Gin Ichimaru. But, he posseses many abilities that suprise the other Court Guard Captains.
Zanpaku-To (his sword's) name: Obsidian
The scabbard is a normal, everyday black scabbard--The blade is a normal katana before it's shikai--it's first released form. A Zanpaku-to has two stages of releases. Before release, it looks like a traditional Japanese katana--In it's shikai, it takes on a different shape or form, and has different abilities concerning it.
After Shikai form all the time, Obsidian is a pure black blade--the hilt, the blade, everything is black, hence the name Obsidian. Obsidian's personality is very dark and brooding, but it wants to genuinly protect Nimaru.
Obsidian's abilities in Shikai are these:
Obsidian's Shikai is activated by the command "Shimmer". Obsidian releases a blinding flash of light from the blade immediately, blinding anyone besides Nimaru that is looking at Nimaru.
The second ability is activated by the command "Shine". Obsidian releases a blade shaped blast from the blade, that deals damage and slashes.
The third ability is activated by the command "Halo". Nimaru focuses his spiritual pressure into his blade, creating blade that he says "can slice through the Haloes of angels". It is reminscent of Gin Ichimaru's Shinso, in that he can extend it by focusing more spiritual energy into the blade.
Bankai
Obsidian's bankai is simply activated by the command "Bankai", and focusing most of his spiritual pressure into externalizing the spirit of Obsidian into physical form.
Nimaru calls Obsidian "Kuro Hikari" in this form, which literally translates to Black Light. The blade transforms into a shortsword with a shield made with "the essence of light"
The shortsword itself has fanged prongs extending from the blade, which slice into the skin, and latch onto the muscles, literally ripping them out when nimaru pulls his arm back. It also makes his "Shine" attack more potent, in that each of the fanged prongs release a blast of light that hit designated targets controlled by Nimaru's spiritual energy.
The shortsword is now dangerous in that when it parries a blow, it releases a flash of light, which can be potent in any situation.
The "Halo" attack is also more potent in that the light blade has the fanged prongs of Obsidian's new form.
The shield also releases flashes of light when it parries blows, but it can also fire a burst of kido at a foe from close range.
Even though Nimaru says he's mastered Bankai, he still hasn't quite mastered it, and still has trouble externalizing Obsidian's rebellious and introversive personality.
