I have been reading through john and got to nicodemus and I am wondering what his role in John is? like why is he in there? any thoughts?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean

He was a leading Rabbi on the Sanhedrin. He meets Jesus at night. Jesus uses the opprotunity to talk about being born again.

HI AdrocK48,
The book of John is one of my most favorites ,

seeing the Love of GOD through Jesus Christ in

the gospel of John/ name meaning ''God is a gracious giver ''
and as Yekcidmij says Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin

and teacher of the Law of Moses '' Torah ''

His role to me was when coming by night , means he was still in darkness , spiritually speaking
and Jesus IS THE LIGHT / the Knowledge and Wisdom of God ,

He went to the Light and I believe the Father drew him to Jesus

Jhn 3:21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light,

that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

hope This helps you as it has me to know
God bless in Jesus peace C ....

Often John uses one member of a body as a representative of the whole body. So Nicodemus is seen as representing the Pharisees. I had an interesting thought about John, Chapter 3 recently and with some research found that it was an idea shared by St. Augustine as well.

1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 He came to Jesus at night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you are doing unless God is with him."
3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." 4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother's womb and be born again, can he?" 5 Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you, 'You must be born from above.' 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
The whole dialogue between Nicodemus and Jesus centers around Nicodemus' misunderstanding Jesus when Jesus says one must be born and then uses the Greek word "anothen", which can mean either again or from above. Nicodemus takes this to mean again and thinks it refers to a second physical birth, while Jesus means one must be born from above of the spirit. The thought I had was why Jesus used verse 6, "What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit". To Nicodemus being Jewish and therefore one of God's chosen people was a matter of who your parent's were. So to him entering the Kingdom of God came by physical birthright. Jesus was trying to explain to him that this had changed and now one must be born of the spirit. I would think that the implication of the widening of the chosen people to include all nations ready to be born of the spirit would have not been lost on Nicodemus, but it seems to have been.

To show that even religious leaders can be interested in Jesus!

He doesn't understand the concept of being born again - do you?

If so, when would you say the disciples were born aagin?

Nicodemus is a Pharisee, and I'm sure Jesus was demonstrating that even some Pharisees can be changed. That and Jesus uses his comments to illustrate a very important theological point- that of rebirth.
