  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello everyone! I joined mainly for an assignment, but I might as well introduce myself. My name is Jake and I am currently attending college.

I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints for all my life. I got off of serving a mission a few months ago (that thing where Mormons wear white shirts and ties and yes – I even rode a bike!). I love our Heavenly father and I am grateful for all his son Jesus Christ has done for me. I consider myself a Christian, and I love God’s holy word- which I believe includes the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:30 KJV

God bless!

Hi Jake, WELCOME TO CF ..

If you don't mind me asking, what does you "assignment" involve?

Thanks!

Yours and His,
David
p.s. - I'll let my LDS friend know that you are new here as well by adding her @Jane_Doe to this post.

No problem! I assume that by “assignment” you mean my mission, correct?

Anyways, the mission program is primarily for unmarried men ages 18-25 and unmarried women ages 19-25. These young people receive an assignment, to go serve somewhere in the world. This assignment, we believe, is inspired of god. Older senior couples and mature single women can serve as well, but they often do different activities than the younger missionaries.

These people go out and perform missionary work like, for example, distributing literature, teaching others, giving service, and strengthening the faith of local members.

I loved my service, it has certainly shaped my life!

Hi Jake, I don't know, it was your word from the OP. See below:

It sounds like it would (shape your life, that is). So that is the "assignment" you spoke of then? You were assigned to this place as a part of your mission field?

Thanks!

Yours and His.

Jake, I think David's asking you to share where you served your mission and what activities you personally enjoyed the most.

Hi Jane, thanks :) I was just interested to know what the nature of his assignment was. We've had a couple of people use that terminology around here over the years, but they were both students who had assignments to finish for school. But I can certainly understand being "assigned" here as a Mormon missionary if that's what he meant. I just wasn't sure, that's all.

How are you doing? (our paths have not crossed here for awhile now sadly)

(Obviously I'm not Jake, but just answering for LDS people in general)

Missions are voluntary things, so that itself is not something forced at all. Once you volunteer to serve, you are 'assigned' to a mission in a certain part of the world. Hence some people will refer to their work in that part of the world as their 'assignment'. Obviously they volunteered for it, and service doesn't stop just because you leave that section of the world (though it does change forms).

So that's where that lingo is coming from. It doesn't have anything to do with school.

How are you doing? (our paths have not crossed here for awhile now sadly)
