Does it show up anywhere in Catholic teaching before then? Was regulating or spacing births for serious reason acceptable before that? How do we know? Is it written somewhere??

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Shannon, to my knowledge, the rhythm method wasn't scientifically proven until 1910, which is almost exactly the same time that the current birth control pill was invented.
Prior to this, folks who did not want to have children, did not have sex, and I believe this was the only advice the Church had to offer folks.
I have always thought it to be less than coincidental that modern day NFP was in its infancy as the rhythm method, at the same time the pill was created.
Also interesting, is that the effectiveness of the rhythm method rivaled the chemical pill then, the same way that the effectiveness of the modern NFP methods rival the pill today.

Is NFP a case of the Church clarifying Her position as technology advanced? Obviously this is the case with things like in vitro and human cloning, etc....
Oh- and Michelle- me and Bernadette are great- though I've been staying up too late
