  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

That is a good question. I use New Advent all the time, mainly for The Catholic Encyclopedia.

It's pretty generous of them to offer it for free online, since they also sell it on CD-ROM.

They could just cut us off and make us buy it.

I'd have to buy it if they did that.

Yea, I'm just curious who this guy is. If he is just a very dedicated Catholic, how did he get the copyrights to put all that stuff online.

Regardless, God bless him and all that he does.

He didn't. It's all public domain; that's why it's the 1911 edition and not the more recent one.

What's the more recent one like? It's hard to imagine anything that beats the NewAdvent version.

I haven't seen the new version, but I'm sure it's been updated to reflect the changes of Vatican II, particularly in discipline and the liturgy.

The inherent risk of the NewAdvent site is that folks use it constantly as a basis for Catholic information and it is not in all instances an accurate reflection of current Church thought, but a reflection of the times in which it was written. While it can be a valuable source for historical data, it has an underlying tone of Latin triumphalism that is offensive to many within and outside the Church and is counter to current day attitudes.

I agree. It is an encyclopedia, not a catechism. Alot of times folks use it in place of the catechism or canon law.

Cajun,

An excellent point that I should have made. Thanks for adding it.
