  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I gave up New Year's resolutions four years ago when I realized I was always setting myself up for "the fall". My NYR's always consisted of pledging to lose weight, be a better person, make more money, go to church more often, have a daily quiet time, etc. After the hype wears off you abandon your resolutions and think, "oh well, there's always next year."

Instead, I decide to take up a new hobby. Last year it was crochet. This year, it's sewing. I want to learn how to sew my own clothes.

I've never stuck with New Years Resolutions either. Taking up a new hobb sounds like a great idea. One thing that I started doing a few years back is taking sometime and just dedicating the new year to God that He'll use me for His glory. I have no idea what 2005 will bring but it is exciting. Now what can i do for a new hobby?

Dr. Phil was on the Today show this morning and the subject was New Year's Resolutions, which sorta prompted me to post this topic. Dr. Phil made some very good points about resolutions:

1) Make them attainable. Not something so far-fetched that if you don't attain them, you feel like a failure.

2) Don't necessarily depend on your emotions at help you attain them. This was mostly aimed at the "start out strong in January, and fizzle out by the first week in February." There are going to be days that you don't want to do those resolutions. He recommended looking at them as projects. What do you need to realistically do to finish this project? Starting a new hobby seems like it would fit into this one.

3) Tell someone-accountablity factor. You tend to do what you need to do if you have to be accountable to someone for your actions.

4) If you have one bad day and really don't hold up the goals you have set for yourself-just member tomorrow is a new day and you can start again. Don't let one day or two days of failure keep you from attaining your goals.

I just thought that was some pretty good advice, because I tend to fizzle out pretty fast on my resolutions too. The one year that I did really good at them was one year when I was teaching Sunday School. I taught 1-2 grade. We made these little mobile type things and wrote 4-5 goals (resolutions) we had for the coming year. Most of the kids were: help mom and dad more, clean my room, be nicer to my little brother, etc..... But I put some things on mine that I really wanted to achieve-eat more heathly, read some of those books I had bought but hadn't read yet, be more invovled in missions, actually finish a one-year devotion book. Just the fact that I knew I had shared these with my SS kids and that they were hanging up in a room and I had to confront them every Sunday seemed to really give me the steam I needed to carry on with them throughout the year. Some days were not so good, but overall, I stuck with them and developed some pretty good habits that continued on. It was the first year I ever actually obtained any of my resolutions.

don't hurt people's feelings with your keyboard.... allow for those who don't agree with you to express their feelings without your condemnation.... let's be respectful of others that don't think and act as "WE" think they should....

offer peace and understanding.... not insult and hurt....

I have a few New Years resolutions that I am going to try to stick to.

1) Become even closer to God.

2) Dabble more in photography. I love photography and truely believe that I could make a career of it if I just get up off of my bum.

3) I would like to lose a little weight. I want to go from 162lbs to around 145lbs.

God Bless,
Sarah

My new years resolution
1)Stick to the gym (i've already been working on this; time to kick it up a notch in 2005)
2)get involved more with my church
3)sell my mustang (yep it's time, i've had my fun)
4)pray more!! ( i guess you can never pray enough.)

Sarah if you have questions about photography let me know, maybe i can answer some, it was an important part of my last job. It can be really rewarding when a shot comes out great or even better than you expected.

Well, this year my main new years resolution is to be less of an ass. I will say thank you when driving though fast food venues and I will hold the door open for people who are lagging behind me who wouldn't reach the door for about 10 second. Plus i will drive slower in town and use Armour All Wax and not that cheap pep boys shisea on my car. I could loose a little weight too. God Bless.

That is my goal of the year is not to be a jerk. And also be friendlier as well.

Gee I don't about that one. I just can not imagine life with out a car that snaps my head back when I step on it. That would be the one resolution in your list that I would break first. Your never too old to have a fun Hot Rod.

i hear you!
I love Hot Rod and Muscle Cars, but for some reason selling it has been weighing heavy on my heart. Maybe God has something planned after it's sold. Maybe I'll use the money to save for a house.

At least some other family members have mustangs that they let me race, one is getting so fast that i might be the only one cazy enough to drive it down the track.

sorry for the highjack but yes selling the mustang will be a very difficult resolution to carry out.
