I just learned of a new television series called "The Young Pope". Its apparently already been airing in parts of Europe, and is set to debut this month on HBO in the United States.
The series stars Jude Law as Pope Pius XIII. As one might guess from the character's choice of Papal name, the reviews say the Pope is conservative. He's also an American, Cardinal Archboship of New York before his elevation the Papacy. Diane Keaton co-stars as a nun.
Anyone seen this yet? Anyone looking forward to seeing it down the line?
I'd definitely watch it of it were a Netflix series, which is my go-to subscription for non-sports non-news programming (i.e. comedies, dramas, scifi, etc.).
HBO is a premium channel in the US, and isn't part of my Playstation Vue subscription (Which is like cable or satelite, you pay a monthly fee for a package of channels and they are on live- difference being that you buy the streaming box of your choice to own [Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, etc.] and it used your wifi Internet connection to stream them to your television instead of them coming over a cable wire directly or from a satelite with no Internet involved. Another difference is that a lot of channels are unavailable, but you pay less, so it evens out). HBO is I think something like a $15-$20 a month cable or fios or satelite or streaming add-on channel, or you can now subscribe to it by itself via online streaming like its its own Netflix or PSVue (Using the same boxes they use) for the same price. Too expensive IMO.
I'm interested in The Man in the High Castle from Amazon's streaming service also, but again exclusivity gets in the way.
Competition is good, but it'd be nice for consumers if all these streaming services that produce original shows could come to some agreement that would see the shows make their way to other services eventually. It could be reciporcal where they all agree to share their original programming with each other, just on a one year delay- so the company that makes it gets an exclusive window to show it, but then eventually its licensed to other services so others can see it also. Its not realistic to expect people to pay to subscribe to a bunch of different services at once each to get like 1 or 2 shows, you know?
I feel like I have Netflix (for binging commercial-free content) and PSVue (for live TV) and that should be enough, but we'll see, maybe I'll find a way to watch it.
Anyway, here's the promotional poster for the show:
