The news is reporting that the military I.D. card that allows entry into a military base had to be stolen. (It's a picture I.D. that needs to be renewed at least every four years and there's a lot of paperwork involved.) The news is also reporting that somehow Aaron Alexis' bag wasn't searched and so he managed to bring the firearm on base--Washington D.C. and all military bases for that matter are gun free zones.

Telling husband to expect even more "tightening up" to get on the military base. (Already it's 100% hands-on I.D. check with computer checking and only searches done every few cars. Military dogs are also sometimes used.)

Back after 9-11, had to enter the military base under the watchful eye of guy on a Humvee with a machine gun trained on the I.D. carrier. Also EVERY building (including the chapel, the hospital, and post office) required presentation of the I.D. yet again and questioning as to purpose plus the searching of any bags the person has.

From what I heard on the news this evening, I was surprised that security on this military facility was so loose. They had no weapons checks and people could just flash their badge to enter the gate.

Jim, don't you know? They needed no "weapons check" because all the military forts/bases are "gun free zones". And yet criminals don't follow laws or "gun free zones". A criminal can just pick off as many as he can and people on military facilities can't even protect themselves.

Good grief :doh:How many deaths will there have to be before folks finally realize that "gun free zones" simply make folks "sitting ducks".

And as far as just "flashing badge", no at every base I've been to, it's "hands-on" and they turn it over and check all the lines (and lately there's a bar code that has to be checked too.) I agree that the searches--where they line people up and have military dogs check them out, plus search their bags, and if the person drives in--they have everyone open all things in the car and then the people are escorted to a small room while several military police search the vehicle) are still random (probably for efficiency), and they could tighten those up.
