New Police Shooting Study

I know it's only been a week since this study came out....but I'm surprised by the lack of mainstream sources covering it...

“There are so many examples of people saying that when black citizens are shot by police, it’s white officers shooting them. In fact, our findings show no support for the idea that white officers are biased in shooting black citizens.”

So racism doesn't appear to be a factor in police shootings....that means...

The bad news, Cesario said, is that internal policy changes, such as diversifying police forces, may not reduce shootings of minority citizens.

Adding more non-white cops won't fix this problem. So what is causing the disparity?

“Many people ask whether black or white citizens are more likely to be shot and why. We found that violent crime rates are the driving force behind fatal shootings,” Cesario said. “Our data show that the rate of crime by each racial group predicts the likelihood of citizens from that racial group being shot. If you live in a county that has a lot of white people committing crimes, white people are more likely to be shot. If you live in a county that has a lot of black people committing crimes, black people are more likely to be shot. It is the best predictor we have of fatal police shootings.”

So here's the big shocker...black people commit more violent crimes, so black people get into situations where they are shot by police more often. It's a big shocker, I know.

So here's the big shocker...black people commit more violent crimes, so black people get into situations where they are shot by police more often. It's a big shocker, I know.

I was brought up Roman Catholic upper white middle class. I was thoroughly trained to respect the police. My grandmother took me aside to tell me that any time I needed help, a police officer was my friend who I could always go to for help. Plus, our doorman at church was the town police officer > one person, maybe, for the whole town.

Plus, Romans 13, to my understanding, means we are required by God to honor and respect those in secular authority, even if they are not right. Because they have God's authority and can be used by God for resisting evil.

So, yes I now know how police work can be harsh and there is a problem with suicides and domestic abuse. So, I understand an officer could be one of these people. So, I am very careful with any officer, to be kind and caring and respectful and encouraging, in case this can help him or her. And I am aware that a police officer could be one of the ones in trouble in oneself; and so I make as sure as I can not to mess with any of them, knowing I could set off one who is unstable.

But I have seen how youths can be looking for trouble. So, if ones of these deliberately berate and provoke an unstable officer . . . the officer is not excused, but neither is the youth.

One video, if I remember right, showed what happened before an officer shot a guy in a car. The sound of the officer's voice seemed like he was terrified in dealing with the man in the car. He had come up next to the driver's window. He just was not ready to be dealing with anyone, I would say.

Other officers stay behind their cruiser doors and tell someone to show hands, get out, kneel down with hands on their heads, and walk on their knees backward toward the cruiser. It is hard to make any mistakes, this way.

But it looks as though ones stopped can play games with the police . . . hiding their hands; others aim a cell phone at the police; in one video where a guy got shot, he looked like he was prancing in front of the officers and gawking at them . . . not cooperating. When ones do this, it can mean they are trying to get officers distracted from someone else who is hiding and preparing to sucker-shoot an officer, or they are playing attention away from a weapon they intend to use once they confuse the officers.

This is not how I was taught to relate with police officers.

I would say there are the cases where hate and racism is involved, but it is wrong to profile every case to be about racism. You need to actually personally know each shooter and shot person, to have a chance of knowing what really has happened in each case.

On a news video, I think it was of a police action in Dallas, a black guy tried to use a car to run down one of two white officers in a parking garage, but they did not kill him, they caught him. And Texas is fine with the death penalty; yet the officers did not shoot him . . . where there may be a death penalty culture.

So, this can go different ways > we can say, oh see how white officers do not always racially profile people. But also it can show that restraint and training and creativity can keep officers from killing suspects.

I think an interesting statistic could be how many whites get killed, out of how many police actions with whites, and compare this with how many blacks get killed for so many police actions.

Not only who does more crimes, but how many are killed for a given number of crimes?

But may be the blacks getting killed are in greater numbers provoking the police . . . for all I know. So, get statistics of how many facing police action are cooperating or not.

Plus, are newscasts helping to teach black youths to profile police officers more, so more youths are resisting so they risk being shot????

It seems there are black youths and adults operating in neighborhood gangs . . . while there might not be gangs in white neighborhoods. I mean, I have not been told of a lot of drive-by shootings in white areas, but yes in black areas. In case this is true, this can mean . . . I consider, at least . . . that there is a culture of gang peer influence which can train members and other youths to resist the police, so there could be more killings of blacks.

Meanwhile, maybe whites have less peer influence to resist police and get killed, since there is not as much gang white culture to help groom them to resist the police.

I mean, if there is more organized neighborhood black gang culture operating, this can maintain more of an organized culture of automatically resisting police.

So, it would not be a question only of if more crimes are committed, but how much criminals have peer support and culture encouraging them to resist the police. If you do a crime on your own, without much peer influence, you might be less likely to feel like resisting the police when they seem to have the upper hand. But if you are gang-attached, you might feel even while you are alone, that you are not alone, and this can embolden you to stand against the police.

So, it might work to actually get to know the people the statistics are talking about, then see what statistics come out.

It is not a surprise that most cops are doing a difficult job well.

It's not surprising at all, really.

We've known this for a long time.

A while ago I read an article about people in law enforcement regarding illegal immigration and they admitted it's practically impossible to work in that line of work and not suspect someone of South American appearance to stand out more as a suspect by virtue of how prevalent that demographic was represented in the number of offences concerning them.

Unconscious bias is a funky term that has started circulating more and more recently, but it's a very real thing and it has to be taken in to account. Even more so when the evidence suggests that a person of colour is no more or less likely to shoot another person of colour than their white colleagues.
