  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings! The Plague of Amarante is a mystery/survival RPG in which the characters are in a relatively free-roaming environment. There is much for each player to discover as they try to unravel the mystery and escape a terrible fate, but you will not be led by the nose! Your decisions will strongly affect what happens to you, to the other players, and to the entire French village of Amarante.

Setting: Amarante is a fictional French village, in the early 17th century. While technology is beginning to advance in this era, it was still a time in which modernism and medieval-era behaviors and settings were enigmatically blended. Louis the XIV is in power, and France suffered greatly from famine and epidemics in the poor farming communities. You as players will be subject to one of the worst of such situations; one that, while possible, is very likely something that only could happen in fiction...

Overview:

The setting is one in which the players find themselves as visitors in a small French village. They don't have to know eachother, but their visitation to the village will make them have the status of outsider in common. The village will begin to suffer from a sudden outbreak of an illness, and the French Authorities will immediately close it down and quarantine it. The visitors will be offered a place to stay by the local monastary, and will be forced to watch as things begin to go to hell, so to speak.

Heretics will be blamed on the epidemic, as well as strange killings that I don't want to reveal too much of, but the players will pretty much have a few objectives:

1. Survive: Its going to be a hostile situation, and they'll have more than an illness looming over them.

2. Try to unravel the mystery of who and what is behind the town's problems.: They will need to snoop and sneak about, but also assist those in need and interact with the locals; especially some unpleasant ones.

3. Combat it and/or escape.: The French Authorities under Louis the Sun King will not allow anyone to break the quarantine, and there WILL be a source behind the problems that must be resisted if the villagers or visitors are to survive.

Character Options:

Now, you may wonder, how do you join up? Well, first thing is first. You need a character. While I have no real requirements for types of characters, and you can do pretty much whatever you want, there will be a couple limitations:

1. No nobility. You may be a low-ranking member of the gentry, but any real power is forbidden. Laymembers of the Church are welcomed, but keep it someone ranking below a Priest, Abbot, or Convent Mother.

2. Keep it somewhat realistic. While there will be fantasy elements to this story, I must ask that you refrain from magical powers or any sort of supernatural attributes. You may be of any profession, and have any reason to be there, but please be reasonable. If you are a soldier, have a reason to not be marching in an army. If you're a monk or nun, have a reason to be there. It can be simple as stopping in Amarante as a pit-stop on your journey elsewhere, or you can have some high-ranking order to transplant there.

Now, keep in mind that if you follow those guidelines, pretty much anything is possible. Just be sure your character speaks French(Or Latin, if you really want to give yourself a handicap but still be able to play), and you ought to be fine.

I'll have a list of NPC's you'll need to interact with and an opener prompt later on, but I have to go for the moment. Please post any thoughts, suggestions, and questions!

Speak English.:p We'll be writing in English, but our characters will be understood as speaking their native and learned languages. French is default, so make it understood if they say something in a different language.

Hey Dave! This sounds FUN! and mysterious of course... I was just KINDA wondering...this is the like the Dr. Jegel Mr. Hide time right?:p like wagons pulled by horses, slightly madival? And I had a character idea...A frenchmen about 35 years old, coming to visit his hometown for a while. And no, he won't be bald:p And one other question, this the thread of like an OOC type thingy?

This is the OOC to the thread I'll start once the players are ready.

I think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide took place in a later date; 19th century, even. No, Amarante will virtually still be in the medieval era. The Church will be the pillar of the community, they will mostly be farmers, medicine will be terrible, and technology of any sort will be uncommon. But most of all, superstition bred by suffering will be at an all-time high.;)

 As a sidenote, my favorite band, Nightwish, has a song by the name of Amaranth(Finnish(or maybe English, not sure) equivalent of the French name for a flower I chose to name Amarante after. If anyone's interested, I can link you to the video and lyrics.

Awesome to see so many people taking interest!:) Please, ask any questions you have and don't be afraid to ask for help with your characters!

Cyberwing, your character's cleared. *whump! stamp of approval*

Terstan, he can be on his way to his hometown, but Amarante should not be it. If he knows everyone, he'll have a distinct advantage in figuring out what's going on. If you still want to have him be a native, we CAN work it out, though. It'll just be a tad challenging, if you're up to it.

Next time you draw a weapon, Terstan, I'm hitting you with the freaking hammer of Morgoth.:p Go talk to Cyberwing and ask her about what happened when Morgoth missed that little Elven twit that dared stand up to him.
