Greetings! The Plague of Amarante is a mystery/survival RPG in which the characters are in a relatively free-roaming environment. There is much for each player to discover as they try to unravel the mystery and escape a terrible fate, but you will not be led by the nose! Your decisions will strongly affect what happens to you, to the other players, and to the entire French village of Amarante.
Setting: Amarante is a fictional French village, in the early 17th century. While technology is beginning to advance in this era, it was still a time in which modernism and medieval-era behaviors and settings were enigmatically blended. Louis the XIV is in power, and France suffered greatly from famine and epidemics in the poor farming communities. You as players will be subject to one of the worst of such situations; one that, while possible, is very likely something that only could happen in fiction...
Overview:
The setting is one in which the players find themselves as visitors in a small French village. They don't have to know eachother, but their visitation to the village will make them have the status of outsider in common. The village will begin to suffer from a sudden outbreak of an illness, and the French Authorities will immediately close it down and quarantine it. The visitors will be offered a place to stay by the local monastary, and will be forced to watch as things begin to go to hell, so to speak.
Heretics will be blamed on the epidemic, as well as strange killings that I don't want to reveal too much of, but the players will pretty much have a few objectives:
1. Survive: Its going to be a hostile situation, and they'll have more than an illness looming over them.
2. Try to unravel the mystery of who and what is behind the town's problems.: They will need to snoop and sneak about, but also assist those in need and interact with the locals; especially some unpleasant ones.
3. Combat it and/or escape.: The French Authorities under Louis the Sun King will not allow anyone to break the quarantine, and there WILL be a source behind the problems that must be resisted if the villagers or visitors are to survive.
