Why should private enterprise exclude a social welfare state? Before Neo Liberalism took hold of Europe we had both private enterprise and social state foundations. So long as a single citizen cannot afford medical care then that society is in want. So long as people live on the streets and eat from refuse bins then that is the mark of a failed society. Let us take the Scandinavian countries as an example: The place where Volvos and Saabs were made, and where their system by any American standards would be considered "Evil Socialist". Do you think they were suffering? Their standard of education was higher and life expectancy higher than America. Their economies were stable and people enjoyed 1 month long yearly holidays. Obviously this system worked! The propaganda that Americans have endured for decades where the very mention of the word "Socialism" conjured up in their imagination scenes from Dantes hell, has made a deep impact in American society. I have no problem with that but the fact that Friedman's model of Neo Liberalism was exported to the rest of the world and ever since then we are experiencing a global economic crisis every decade or so is testament to the failure of Neo Liberalism. Europe is on the verge of social revolution unseen since the French revolution. We have more unemployment now and homeless people then we had since the last war. All this thanks to Neo Liberalism. It used to be that a CEO made 20 times that of the normal employee in his company; Now he makes a thousand times more. Neo Liberalism is destroying the middle class. It is destroying family ties, religious customs, national identities and all for what? So that some filthy rich speculators can become even more rich? It is hubris to state that only CEOs are educated enough. Lest you forget; We can live without the CEOs but can they live without us? Bankers and speculators are no better than the drug barons of Colombia. They are the thugs of modern societies and their time will soon come for we do not want to eat cake!
