  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I believe you are right, the "new moons" are tied to months.

The Sun circles the earth in about 365.25 days, while the moon's cycle is something like 29.5 days... We know the Hebrew month is 30 days; so i believe the New Moon is tied to the beginning of the month (around the 30th day) and the religious exercises they were to uphold at this time.

Thanks Paul. What were the religious exercises that they did or do? Is the 'theme' of the new moons like 'the start of a new month of life to praise the Lord in'? Or what? I've been reading my bible again and anything i don't understand i'm gonna ask here:)
I'm not "really" sure but i'll so some research!!

In the meantime, try asking this question in the M/J forum.

Well i've read many sites last night about the new moon, it was very interesting. This is two of them:
http://www.emeth.net/ljhhd.html
http://www.geocities.com/royh_il/
I read at one time, the declaration of the new month was communicated to the entire country by either shofar blasts or torches from mountaintop to mountaintop, they started on the Mount of Olives. It was a family feast day to celebrate a new month.

Part of creation, the moon was given for a sign for seasons, days and years along with the sun. The new moon however is the "starting point" for all our holydays and is the 1st of the month of ( insert proper month). Our next Rosh Chodesh will be starting on August 17th evening, thus the 1st of Elul.

The new moon had to be sited and sactified from the temple and "telegraohed" from there. There is only one Biblical holyday that falls on Rosh Chodesh, do you know which one? Rosh Chodesh is also a dark night. :)

Yup! :) Actually we have many "New Years" but this is the day of the blowing of the shofars ( or trumpets) also tied in with Ressurection. It is a dark night because there is no moon;)

The gate that leads to the temple ( the east gate or beautiful gate) is only to be opened on Shabbat and on the new moon, for the prince to enter. The people are to worship at this gate before the L-RD in the Sabbaths and the new moons.
