  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just picked up the new U2 album today. After the first listen, I would have to say, its one of thier best.

I have always been intrigued with thier music and Bono's Catholicism. Although I hesitate to call thier music "Christian", the religious tone of thier lyrics are not found anywhere in popular music these days. It amazes me how a Mega-Band like U2 can open sing about Jesus and God and not get creamed by the critics! I know Bono isn't a model Catholic, but I give him alot of credit for putting his band and himself out where no one else dares to go.

Thoughts?

I knew they had *some* kind of Christian influence - didn't realize it was Catholic, though!

Haven't heard the new CD, but I've like a few of their songs that I've heard in the past. They tackle some interesting subject matter, though. I agree that they are a step in the right direction, and I am surprised how much easier it is to listen to rock when the band wasn't afraid to mention God.

I wish allowing religious influences into music was the norm, rather than the exception, though. But since mentioning God is the exception, U2 seems to be commendable.

I didn't think he was Catholic????
His father was Catholic and his mother was Protestant. That is pretty much how he sees himself. In between. Considering his father is Catholic and Irish, I am assuming he was at least baptized Catholic. He has made the coment that it is Catholic guilt that drives him to help raise awareness of poverty and AID's in the Third World.

I've been a mini-fan of U2 for the past 21 years, and i had the pleasure of watching a TV interview with Bono as the guest, only last week.

He did mention his faith. He didn't elaborate greatly, but he did say that he believed in God..he seemed to be saying that he wasn't 'churchy', but that he believed...i got the impression he was uncomfortable analysing his faith.

I would never pay a fortune for a concert ticket...the most expensive ticket i ever bought was about £25.00, and that was 21 years ago with coach travel included, when i went to see Rush on their Signals tour at the NEC in Birmingham...mint!

Metanoia, I will follow! I'm a fan of U2 and Coldplay. Great thread. How is the new album?

I liked the last one, especially, "New York, New York" and I thought they had even better songs in the album than were released!

U2 has some good stuff, but I don't see how they can justify charging $150 - $200 for a concert ticket. Seems rediculous to me.
I saw U2's Elevation tour in 2001 and I think the ticket was something like $35. Of course they weren't the best seats, but I had fun! I have liked U2 since high school. They have a song called "40" which is basically word for word the same as Psalm 40.

I just remember them coming to Chicago and the newspapers were running a story comparing the ticket prices. When U2 played 15 years ago, an average ticket was around $8, now it was around $150 or $160.

I got to go see them in concert! But the ticket was given to me by a friend at church because she was orginally going with her brothers, but one of them got accepted to go an an exchange program to Switzerland, so she gave me her tickey. They are rather well off and completely refused to take any money for it so I made a charity donation of $25 in her name and have her the certificate to say thanks and she loved it. The concert was FANTASTIC and I have all their CDs and listen to thm all the time.

Anyway, long random story there. I have always loved them - they are fantastic!

Maybe being on the floor was $150 or $160, then. There were a lot of seats much better than ours. They had a fantastic stage in the shape of a heart, and some people were sitting in the middle of the heart. I bet those seats were expensive. We were up pretty high.

If you are a U2 fan you will not be disappointed. Some of the songs on this album are amoung the best they have every put out. You have probably already heard "Vertigo" the first single. It opens the album with a blast of sound (one of the few songs have turned up the volume in my car to 10. Great song great lyrics. "All Because of You" is another great song played on 10.

Again great lyrics....

Some people get squashed crossing the traks
Some people have hi-rises on thier back
I'm not broke but you can seethe cracks
You can make me perfect again

All because of You
All because of You
All because of You...I am.

Last song on the album "Yahweh" ends the album on a high note of redemption.

Take this shirt
Polyester white trash made in nowhere
Take this shirt
And make it clean

Take this soul
Stranded in some skin and bones
Take this soul and make it sing

Yahweh...Yahweh

As I said it only gets better.
