On a whim I thought I'd try role playing a Christian monk... I haven't started but I made my character...
...I think it would be an interesting experiment in thought.

Anyone have any ideas of how I should do it... I want to be proper good, and stuff - but not all self rigtious like a palidin... palidins annoy me. (I am sure there are tolerable paladins - just I never met one).

I thought the D&D monk was based on the Asian monks.

Paladins are actually the hardest to role-play properly if your DM is evil. Alignment restrictions can make for some very tough choices. ^_^

A cleric would probably fit the Christian monk better.

Neverwinter Nights doesnt focus on religion as much as DnD could. Its not a bad thing really, but your character would probably just end up being a bland "good monk". I like the game though. In my actual DnD game i am a christian sorceror/celestial-apprentice. Just thought id add my two nerd cents ^_^

I beat the game as a "pure" monk. (pure meaning I only got levels in monk) It was alright but it was too easy. There was almost nothing I couldn't take on without a thought, even the end boss. I think if I were to play the game again I think I would be a sorceror/warrior combination. Or something like that, but I hate D&D's spell system, I would much rather have mana or something instead of you can use this spell three times a day or untill you rest...

My favorite is a 2 level Paladin, 2 level Fighter, 16 level Cleric multiclass. For spells it's mostly stat/power augmenting, with Heals and Harms to instantly reduce enemy to 1 HP, and some other offensive spells where applicable.

For a brief period at least, by pumping my stats up, I can become a sort of "Champion of God" type deal. Rather cool and anime-esque I think (those animes where the characters can become super-powered for awhile by doing transformations)

What servers do all of you play on?

I've been playing a Sylvan Ranger on an extremely well run (though not-christian) Persistent World server called Exaria www.exaria.net

They have a coded deity system for clerics, unfortunately, which I've avoided as a ranger. They insist that they don't mean to impose certain religions on the PC's, but also insist that they are only going to act out divine intervension on behalf of said deities (and not any other player created God). Do you all think that playing on a server like that is wrong? Other than this, and the whole question about the arcane magic thing, it is an extremely well run persistent world.

I like to RP as a sorc, since I like the technical aspects of casting. It's also handy to be able to summon a pixie or an elemental when the situation demands. I RP as a good samaritan sorc, one of my favorite things being to run around rescuing lower-level PCs and dispensing free heals and rezzes. And I try to be a nice player as well, trustworthy for swaps, sharing loot, etc.

My favorite online mod is Path of Ascension.

I can't stand mean people in online RPGs. They get their just reward when people start avoiding them and not inviting them into parties.

The only excuse for bad behavior is when it's deliberately part of the PC's role-play persona, not when it comes from the player's real personality

Thanks for playing at Exaria. I'm Fang, the Head DM over at Exaria. I happened to catch this post in passing and thought I'd reply.

A. Regarding the deity system in Exaria being exclusive to non-Exarian deities.

-Exaria first and foremost is a game server designed for players to have fun. The worst-case scenario dangers for an online world are players who immerse themselves too deeply within the world. Thus, the lines between reality and fantasy blur. In Exaria, we promote roleplaying, which I would describe as acting as opposed to becoming. It's fine for players to choose deities that are not of Exarian origin, or to choose not to have a deity at all. This will not allow a player to cast spells as a cleric, druid or paladin, but is in the interest of promoting the atmosphere of the world. An example I would give is if you're a kid playing Cowboys & Indians (yes, not the best PC example I could come up with at this time), it would be out of place to have a ninja involved in the play. I believe using Exarian deities would not conflict with any Christian beliefs as long as the player was able to discern between reality and fantasy/fiction.

B. Regarding meeting people to play with in Exaria.

-Exaria has a deep player base and even with so many players, it is often difficult to find people to play with at low levels. One of the reasons is that many players have friends in real life that they play with in game. Their groups tend to be centralized around their friendship. Other players are focused on leveling rather than helping new players out which is unfortunate. I would recommend to a new player to either play with a friend in the world, which isn't always possible, or to start hanging out in the areas of the world where more players congregate. Many players do look out for newer players in the world; showing them around.

In response to UK Cowboy's comment about being ignored...

Really? I just started a new character and got quite the opposite impression. Granted, you have to be patient enough to wait for people to show up. That is the main difference on a Persistent World -> it is not so much like playing a game as living an experience. I mean, think about it - if you went on vacation, not everyone is going to stop and cater to you just because you show up. Some people are jerks, but even the others need something to go on. Roleplay a bit and keep at it, and I am positive you will find some interesting PCs online, especially on Exaria.

*Wave* Hey Fang, wow, didn't expect you to show up here. (Anylden Lindúrenan)

As shown above, the staff is really great about catering to everyone. As for me, it's just a personal preference that I avoid the Deity system. I certainly think it makes for a richer fantasy setting.
