• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Many of us, including me, have negative critical thoughts going in our head much of the day. I'm referring to the non-psychotic type. For me it's likely because my mom was always so critical of me, my own perfectionism and who knows what else.

I came to the realization lately that it's just God and me. God resides in me and He would never accuse or be critical other than conviction of sin, which isn't what the negative talk is about.

Romans 8:1
There is therefore, now no condemnation, for those who are in Christ Jesus.

1 John 4:15
If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the son of God, God lives in him and he in God.

So when I hear the critical voice in me I tell it to shut up and let myself be who I am, and do what I do the way I do it, as long as it is righteous or benign behavior. Whether Satan is directly involved in this I'm not sure. I'm inclined to believe it's my own sinful nature and patterns that have developed. But Satan is the accuser and if Satan is involved:

James 4:7
Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

And we should not judge ourselves (as in condemn, berate etc.):

1 Corinthians 4:3
I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.

Although we should examine ourselves to be sure we are living out the faith God wants us to live:

2 Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?

This is a tough battle because a life-long pattern is very difficult to dismantle. But I'm making progress.

I hope this helps somebody.

And if you have any critique, additions or other Scripture please feel free.

AMEN!!!!!!!! This has been a huge battle for me, and as I have replaced those lies in my head with the truth of God's Word, these thoughts have faded tremendously. This was one of the necessary steps for me in my battle to get well. There were still hard times when old issues in relationships reared there ugly heads and times when I could only pray Lord help me to take each thought captive in Christ Jesus and Renew my mind (yes those are both verse, I just don't have the time to look them up this time) and God answered my prayers. These times I also played bible verses on my cd player as I went through this or as I fell asleep. I have had times where I have had to speak the verse out loud, etc. Everyone will find what works best for them or already know! I also have wonderings about the role of Satan or not in this. I do feel these "feelings" or "thoughts" have been there since I was very young. I know they are lies in direct contradiction to what God says about me and God's truth. I also wonder if my upbringing and chemistry (bp) make me more susceptible to these thoughts. i do know FOR ME, when my meds really kicked in these thoughts just slipped away. I also know that when these thoughts begin to return it is a sign that my moods are slipping and I need to do good self care. Am I demon possessed-NO WAY!!!! Am I perhaps more easily influenced by Satan and his lies-I am not sure. I do know it is a symptom of my illness and I am the only one who knows my thoughts, therefore I am the only one who can choose to deal with them and that God promises me to be strong in my weakness, to provide for all my needs, and has left me with the truth in the Bible and the Spirit in my life to help me learn and grow and become the person He created me to be.

I really appreciate this, lemonflavor. The negative thoughts are beginning to sprinkle in my mind like the rain today. I met with my prayer partner and very good friend whom I have known for 12 years and she said a lovely prayer for me. This also helps. I believe in the power of prayer and know it can bring down strong holds quickly if we but believe.

Again, I do appreciate your post. Your timing was good. Thank you for sharing.

Good ones. Thanks.

2 Corinthians 10:5
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Romans 12:2a
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

A prayer:

Loving Father, strengthen my mind to be able to take captive every thought and make it obedient to you. Let me know quickly when I'm thinking untruthful thoughts and show me your truth. Renew my mind so that my thoughts are pleasing to you.
