Revelation 22:
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

This is the passage you refer to. It means: Tell it like it is-no more-no less!

From JB Phillips Translation
22:18-19 - Now I bear solemn witness to every man who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to these words God will add to him the disasters described in this book; if anyone takes away from the words of prophecy in this book, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city which are described in this book.

Gotcha! :)
It just occurred to me that there have been people who preach the gospel in their own way. I won't say how but it sort of made me go "Why are they saying that?"

Like the blind man. The pastor spoke of the blind man (the one that Jesus healed or one of them if there were more) having sat with his security blanket begging etc and left his blanket for Jesus (he goes on for a whole 40 minutes full of talking about life's situations and how we can refer to the blind man etc). When the bible only said he got up and asked for healing from Jesus.

I hope for that pastor that it wasn't adding words. :(

It means to purposely distort the Spirit of truth that is in the Word. Adding to the meaning of God's words in a manner to lead someone else astray from the truth. Or taking away so as to lead someone into error or sin is bad, bad, bad, as you can see by what the consequences of doing such a thing are.

This command may be applied to the whole of scripture, however, I believe in this referrence it is referring to this book (Revelations) only. We are being warned to not add any words to the prophesy or take any words away. God has spelled out exactly what He wants us to know.

When we don't have details of the situation I don't think it's wrong to speculate, as the pastor with the blind guy did. However, when we try to manipulate others with our speculations it is wrong.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about it.

That verse was applying to Revelation, though a good concept, I'm not real comfortable with saying it applies to all of scripture. Since I think it applies to Revelation, I think it means that God has told you all he wants you to know about the end times, don't go speculating on it (no dates, no visions of what you think it will be, etc etc.)

I don't see how referring to Joseph as Jesus' father is blasphemy. Sounds kinda nit-picking to me. Joseph may not have been Jesus biological father but that doesn't mean he wasn't Jesus' father. I don't ever recall the NIV saying that Jesus was the offsring of Joseph.

Well I am sorry if I have offended you. We are all entitled to what we are comfortable with. I have a lot of other problems with the NIV as I pointed out, but since it is not my thread to hi jack I will not spend a lot of time on it.

If you are pleased with the NIV then may God bless you in it.

I do agree with you that this passage seems to refer to the Book of Revelation, but that there is an application for the entire Bible.
