  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm starting to get a little more serious about photography. I currently own a Canon G2 camera and would like to upgrade to the Canon Rebel XTi but it's just not in the budget right now. In the mean time I was thinking about buying some lenses for my G2 but only if they would then be compatible to use with the XTi when I can finally upgrade. I've tried to find out if this would be possible online but apparently much of the photography world is still Greek to me so now I'm just confused. Would someone more knowledgable be able to tell me whether I would be able to cross the lenses between the G2 and Xti using the G2 lens adapter?

Thanks for any help.

The G2 isn't an SLR camera, there aren't any lenses you can buy for it. It's just the lens that it comes with. You can only use interchangeable lenses with SLR Cameras. (SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex, which basically means that when you look through the viewfinder, you're looking out through the same lens that takes the picture, not a seperate viewfinder lens. A mirror is used to bounce the light up, and this mirror flips up out of the way when you take a picture.)

The Rebel XTi is a digital SLR camera, so you can buy interchangeable lenses. Any of the Canon EF or EFS lenses will fit on the Rebel XTi.

However, the Canon G2 isn't an SLR, so it doesn't use the interchangeable lenses that the XTi uses.

The lens adapter you mentioned doesn't allow you to change lenses on the camera. Instead, it allows you to add filters to the camera. Filters can be very useful, but there are different sizes. The Canon lens adapter accepts filters that are 58mm in diameter. And, the kit lens that comes with the XTi has a diameter of 58 mm, so you will be able to use the same filters. But it seems a fair bit of hassle just to use a few filters...

However, the lens adapter does seem to offer a lot of protection for the lens of the G2, and the lens adapter with a UV filter on the end will offer a lot of protection.

Hehe now I'm even more confused! :D I was doing research on my lappy while out of state and I just got home tonight. I got out my G2 manual and went to where I thought it talked about adding lenses and this is what it said, "The seperately sold Conversion Lens Adapter LA-DC58 is required to use conversion and close up lenses with the camera, such as the seperately sold Wide Converter WC-DC58, Tele-converter TC-DC58 and Close up Lens 250D (58mm)."

What lenses are they talking about?

The lenses they are talking aren't like the lenses that go on the front of an SLR camera. They're speaking of lenses that are more like a magnifying glass. They are just a single element and they screw onto the front of the adapter like a filter. They can be useful, but you'll get better results from a proper macro lens or wide angle when you get your Rebel, as the screw on lenses are likely to cause vignetting (a dark fuzz around the edges of the photo), or a lack of focus.

Then lenses that the rebel uses don't screw on, but they have a click-lock kind of fitting. They also have electrical contacts for the focussing and aperture, so they can only be used on a camera that has the right kind of lens mount. The lens adapter for the G2 doesn't have this, I'm afraid.

Thanks for answering my questions. I guess I'm pretty much stuck where I'm at then until I can upgrade!

yeah, but think of it this way - it's a bit more money that you've saved for the camera! And there's lots of great lenses that you can buy for your Rebel as well, so you can save up and buy them instead of the G2 adapter.

Actually, this was my very first thought! Save your money for the good stuff instead of getting eager and buying something mediocre - you'll be more greatful in the long run. The xti is a great camera, it's lightweight - if you haven't done so already, go into a store and play with different models and see how they feel in your hands, where the buttons/controls are. Do it more than once! ;) The Nikon D40 is a good camera as well that is in a similar price range. The better your lens, the better your picture. Don't scrimp on your glass if you can help it.
