  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everybody,

We have 3 cats. 1 is 13 years old and the other two are 2 kittens 4 months old (same age but different litters).

First, is there any way to help our 13 yearold adapt to having 2 other cats in the house? The kittens are very curious and the 13 year old is very hostile.

Second, of the two kittens, one will not stay off the counters. I have a spray bottle of water that gets them off the counters, but I often hear them jumping on the counters when I am in the other room. I've gotten more aggressive in my application of the water, but it doesn't seem to affect their desire to get on the counters. It worked with the dining room table. They never get on it now, but the counters are a different story. There is no door to close to keep them out of the kitchen. What would you suggest for getting them to stay off the counters?

Thanks and God bless you,
Dave

You can also put aluminum foil or double sided tape on the counters. It can be a lot of work, but the noise and the feel of it on their paws usually deters them and after a few days, they should stay off the counters. For the older kitty, she'll adjust eventually. It's good that you got two kittens since that will help keep them entertained without bugging the older one. You can also try something called Feliway. It's a plugin that you can buy at Petsmart or Petco that helps calm cats down. It's a little pricey, but it works pretty well for stressed out cats.

Yay, kitties! What are they called??? One of my sisters uses water to stop her cats getting up to mischeif but our cats are obviously highly spoilt as they go where they want!

I hope your older cat gets used to the others. Our oldest is the Mum to three of the others but she is so grumpy and only just tolerates them. It is just because she has a grumpy nature though ;)

Oh yes the Cats and Counters routine. These are great suggestions. The basic idea is to scare them with sudden noise as soon as they get up there. Do you have collars with bells on them so you can hear where the kitties are? It is hard to keep a constant eye on the little buggers. They also hate the smell of moth balls. I used the moth discs you can can put in a special hanger for the closet. They were with the moth balls and hangers in Walmart. It worked with one cat I had trouble with. Also Amonia is a good deterrent and for awhile I would soak cotton balls in it and then wrap aluminum foil around them (just enough to cover the balls, I was too afraid the cats would try to lick them or something) and then place them around the plants in pots. My one cat used to try to go potty in my big pot in the kitchen. Then that stopped working and I had to use alum foil on top of the soil. Now she doesn't do it anymore. Good luck and can't wait to hear what the names are.
