• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Do it with Lemons. Mind Association.

You must have heard of the dog experiment where they got dogs to saliva with the ringing of a bell. (To do this they gave the dog a biscuit and rang a bell, eventually the dog would associate bell rings with biscuits)

You are not so much addicted to the cigarette as to the mind patterns. Your mind associates cigarettes with things you do. Hence habit That is why you pick up the paper; suddenly feel like a cigarette etc.

Your brain will always try to move you away from pain.

You’ve got to associate having a cigarette with pain. Something harmless that repulses you!

Have a bag of lemons with you. Every time you feel like a cigarette, cut the lemon in half and put the whole thing (except skin) including pulp into your mouth.

Brain patterns normally take a couple of weeks to establish, but most probably after about a week, your brain would have associated wanting a cigarette with the full pulp of a lemon going into your mouth.

To get around it, your brain will then start waking you up in the middle of the night for a smoke, but all you have to do is have the lemons ready at the side of your bed.

You must also avoid going to places where you normally smoke. Break your patterns.

Of course some people will like putting lemons in their mouth, so Lemons won’t work for them. But just change the lemon pulp for something else. i.e. cayenne pepper

Hope you succeed

I stopped hanging out when they smoked.Could be a different scenario for you.Im married,my wife and kids don't smoke.I only had to deal with work, all my close pals have quit.Work quarters, where most were smoking during breaks/lunch I ended that with going outside. I also don't go out with people to dinner that smoke,I tell them I'm unable to at this time.Smoking is such a fierce addiction. You either quit or aquire all the things that cigs will give you. We're all going to die, friends will say this.I told them sure, but on Gods time,Im not polluting the time I have left to do good any longer.People will shrug at you, thats ok Its your future not theirs.Good Luck
