In Revelation 17 there is a phrase: "...many names of blasphemy."
According to the known biblical definition of blasphemy, where would these names come from? Who would they be?
Guardian, I fail to see the connection between the statement of the prophecy to the application you are trying to make in your reply.
I do not accept that Rome is the woman, nor that the beast is Italy.
It speaks of the seven heads as being seven mountains and are seven kings... five are fallen... have you ever heard of any of these "hills" in Rome fall? These are symbolic figures and are not literal.
Rome is called the city of the seven hills from which can be seen from the ocean. Upon each hill sat a Pagan temple, and each hill was named after that Pagan god. In the day when John wrote Revelation, the Roman soldiers would also paint in blood a dragon upon their shields.
You seem to be oblivious to the many deceptions of Satan, to flood the world with false interpretations to keep the people from seeing the truth. Jerusalem has also been given that label.
An interesting side note: I just looked up the seven hills of Rome, and the Vatican hill is not counted among the seven traditional hills.
Other than that, I have nothing to add to the speculation about this subject. Others may.
Vatican Hill (in Latin, Mons Vaticanus ) is the name given, long before the founding of Christianity, to one of the hills on the side of the Tiber opposite the traditional seven hills of Rome. It may have been the site of an Etruscan town called Vaticum.
The name "Vatican" has often been thought to derive from the Latin "vates", meaning "seer, soothsayer", though this is uncertain and it is also possible that "Vaticanus" comes from an unrelated Etruscan loan-word. Indeed, the Vatican Hill was the home of the Vates long before pre-Christian Rome. Vaticanus, also known as Vagitanus, was an Etruscan god of prophecy, and his temple was built on the ancient site of Vaticanum (Vatican Hill).
In the 1st century AD, the Vatican Hill was outside the city limits and so could feature a circus (the circus of Nero) and a cemetery.
The Vatican Hill is not one of the famous seven hills of Rome although it was included within the city limits of Rome during the reign of Pope Leo IV, who, between 848 and 852, expanded the city walls. Thus, Vatican Hill has been within the walls and city limits of Rome for over 1100 years. Until the Lateran Treaties in 1929 it was part of the Rione of Borgo.
Before the Avignon Papacy (13051378), the headquarters of the Holy See were located at the Lateran Palace. After the Avignon Papacy the church administration moved to Vatican Hill and the papal palace was (until 1871) the Quirinal Palace, upon the Quirinal Hill.
There you go.
The hills of Rome are irrelevant to the prophecy.
I don't know what version of Scripture you are using, but the Bible speaks of only ONE dragon. The others you refer to are not called the dragon. They are called beasts.
The beast from the sea is the papacy. It is not the dragon or a dragon. The beast from the earth is the USA and speaks like a dragon, but it is not the dragon nor a dragon.
