  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My favorite pastor at my church who has always been there for me and answered my endless questions is leaving for another position as a chaplain for a school.
I’m bummed but at least he’ll remain a member of our church.
Has anyone here been in a similar position?

Anyone else get attached to their pastors?

Yeah, it is disapointing. However, it is also worth remembering that as members of the Lutheran church (or Catholic Church for that matter) our focus is on the Eucharist and the Gospel, not so much on the man ordained at the front of the church. It is a distinctive that sets us apart from non-denominational and mega-churches driven by personality.

All that said, it is sad to loose someone that we can identify with or that inspires us.

Sorry to hear that! At the same time, I'm glad to hear you were able to connect with and rely on him. That's great! But as the old cliche goes, change may not be easy, though, positively, God willing, you will get a new Pastor who is also able to connect with you. Then you'll have two pastors in your life!

I've never had that experience, it was more like when I had questions in Bible study that they were discouraged from being asked by participants. it was also very basic in the Lutheran Brethren, so I stopped going to that denom, not sure how ACNA or LCMS is in comparison. It was desultorily done.

Yes. After our last pastor left, my church went downhill and I started looking for another church. While I agree we should focus on the Gospel, in practical terms, it isn't that simple. Especially in Lutheranism, there is a tendency for congregations to not be very missionally minded in the absence of a leader who inspires and motivates people.

I don’t think it’s the denomination. I think it’s the individual churches. I just hope mine doesn’t drastically change now that my pastor left. He wasn’t the head pastor there, though. Our lead pastor has been in his position for many years so I’m hoping things will stay as they are.

I saw a local Lutheran parish seem to almost disappear when the pastor left. Before that it seemed pretty active and had a fair amount of youth.

When that happens, makes you wonder what that church is really built on? Is it Jesus and the family of God, or just a good pastor?
