My heart is heavy today, but this has to be written today.
Yesterday a life-long friend died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack.
We became friends in grade school. On His first day at a new school He gave me 1/2 of His ice cream bar during break time. I had never purchased anything at break because we simply didn't have the money. It didn't matter to me, I was fine not having something at break, but it bothered Him. From that day on we would take turns buying anything that could be shared, and breaking them down the middle but the money was always His. When He gave me His money, ever other morning for my turn to buy, He meant it, it was mine, and no one ever knew that it wasn't mine.
We went through high school in totally different circles but we were always best friends and He went to my activities and sat with my family and I did the same with His. In 1968 He joined the Navy and I joined the Air Force. We both married High School sweethearts. He stayed in the Navy for 20 years and I got out and went to college.
His family spent vacations at our house every year until He retired from the Navy and moved back home.
We spent more time together before He came back than we did after. We have both been so busy that we just didn't see each other much over the last 10 years. I knew He was ok and we talked on the phone but there was no time for much else.
He had just started a new church as one of the founding members when the Lord took Him home yesterday.
I will never forget the 1/2 ice cream bars.
Share something today. Go see an old friend. Slow down.
Pray.
Forgive someone right this second.
