  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As it says in the heading....I found God about 10 years ago and I live a sacred life, adhering to God's Word. I absolutely CONDEMN every form of idolatry and I tell this to Heavenly Father too. But my mother - with whom I otherwise have a very good relationship - worships idols and now she worships them in my name!!!!
I have told her to stop and everytime I do this, it ends up in a row, because she is - although she's kind - psychologically, a narcissist with her own issues. She's into Hinduism (!) and New Age beliefs. She's very naive and would worship anyone and anything, if success is promised or even if she admires someone.

Currently I'm also going through a difficult situation in life; throughout my life as a believer, I have always prayed every day, but I'm afraid that her activities may counteract the proper transmission of my messages to Heavenly Father (?). I don't feel anything good happening in my life in the last two years (it's been like a curse), and knowing about her activities makes me really anxious. She prays for me for things to get better in my life (I lost my job twice, I'm in my late 30ies and wanting to marry and have children but no future husband in sight,...)

I can't cut her off, because, after all, she's my mother and she is otherwise kind. But you can see the demonic influence, that she gets mad when I ask her not to pray for me. This idol-worship also encourages her to drink (she then becomes another character) and attack me.

Has anyone had similar experiences with idolaters praying for you - against your will - and if yes, what do you do for spiritual protection ?

John10:27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

You are Jesus's highly prised possession. He left heaven and all its glory to die a degrading, horrible death for you.

Trust in what Jesus has done, know that the gods your mother worshgips are not gods and that she cannot worship them for you, any more than you can worship God for her.

Pray for her, don't make a fuss about what you are doing or what she is doing. If she asks questions answer them and pray that God will use your conversations to open her eyes.

Believe that greater is He who is in me than he that is in the world.

Christians pray for others against their will all the time. They don’t seek permission or stop if they believe the situation warrants it. If she asked you to stop praying on her behalf would you listen? Would you forsake her well-being and knowledge of the Lord to appease her request? Or would you press on?

In her mind she’s helping you. Much like you’d say in your regard. In spite of the sacred life you referenced, you’ve made mistakes and sinned in many ways. Stop focusing on her and laying your troubles in her lap.

Keep your eyes on God and seek His wisdom and peace in the things you’re facing. Pray for her. But avoid strife and disagreements. Its of no benefit to either.

Several things to keep in mind.

1. Honor thy Father and thy Mother.
2. If her prayers are unacceptable to God, that is between God and your Mother.
3. You won't be endorsing her religious beliefs in any case.

Thank you for your kind words John. No one can snatch me out of His hand - that is not the problem. I pray for her, but God chooses His sheep. I can't help what people are doing around me, "for me", God sees our hearts. So I will see it that way.

I posted this question because there's also the topic of "curses", as in a speech by Derek Prince. One of the things you need to do - aside from getting yourself clear with Heavenly Father through repentance - is to throw away all idolatrous stuff. Curses can also affect believers btw (according to that sermon and others) and although we're all sinners and need to repent, this (these objects) was one of the points. My mother lives with me, and out of respect for her feelings, of course I cannot get rid of her stuff or stop her. God sees what's in each of our hearts. I have a hippie at home. I love and respect her and when she attacked me under the influence twice, as someone who honors her parents, it was me that backed down after only saying that I could NOT "thank" her for her prayers "to all the gods" lol (this was what I called "row" - it was only that short argument and her not talking to me for a few hours after). And it hurt, but I pray to God to open her eyes.

Also have problems with my mother.

Was told to just keep giving her to God.
Seems to be working
at least on my side anyway.

Some people don't seem to understand; I'm glad you do, Thank You. It is a difficult situation when it's a person close to you and then you see your own photo at an idol-altar and can't say anything without being yelled at. An otherwise kind and gentle person suddenly changes her composure when the issue is addressed - like in the movie Lord of the Rings, when Bilbo sees the ring on Frodo.
And when she takes alcohol, that's when I get attacked in very evil, tricky ways that are so "not her", but obviously "spirits", that know how to hurt me best. My mother would never say such things, but she turns into a different, cold, arrogant figure - practically a "stranger". I always have to pray for her and against these attacks and it helps, but with people like this, you need to do it constantly because, as long as she doesn't completely give up on alcohol, you never know, when the next time will be.

He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. She can pray to idols till she is blue in the face and it will have no effect on you.

Read the story of Elijah and the Prophets of Baal if you need to know how much power they hold vs God.

Treat your mother well and take care of her as best as you can, for that is your charge - to honor father and mother.
