I always thought of the dispensations as chapters in a book. As with any book, there is a beginning, conflict, climax, and ending. As the book progresses, more and more is revealed. With a new dispensation, new info is revealed and this info doesn't conflict with previously revealed info (otherwise, we just have a very confused God).
For example, the law serves the same purpose as always: The law was added so that the trespass might increase... Romans 5:20 This, I believe, makes Jesus the superhero of the story. In Matthew 5:17, Jesus reveals this little tidbit, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."
I believe that the stewardship involved is the responsibility that new information gives us.
Is this dispensationalism or should I find a different label?
