A friend of mine asked me if I considered Amtrack in my cross country move from Pennsylvania back to live with my folks back in Scotts Valley, California (Northern California, 20 minutes away from Silicon Valley if the traffic is good).
Basically I would be driving back in my 2005 Pontiac Vibe, which while 17 years old, isn't bad on its miles, maybe 178 K. But I am sort of leery, in that with it being an old car, there is a decent chance of a highway break down in driving this kind of distance. I would say, maybe 1/4 chance minimum, maybe worse.
(It's been good on not breaking down, and I try to keep it serviced with preventive maintenance but little leery that some obscure part might break on such a trip).
Anyway my friend brought up Amtrak, that I could maybe ship my car there and also travel by train too. So I'm just starting to look into this. And no, I cannot get a car package traveling from Philadelphia to San Jose CA. But I am trying to work the idea, where I can send my car on a separate train, and take a different one for myself back to California.
Anyway anybody got Amtrak riding experience? And what do you think of the idea?
I an currently looking at taking 2 Trains to get to California with my car.
There is one called the Zephyr that connects Northern California, Emeryville to Chicago, and another called the Capitol Limited that connects Pittsburg to Chicago.
