Hi everyone. Today I decided to attend a new Baptist church. I had read their small article in the Church Pages of our newspaper a few times and decided that it sounded like a church that I would like to go to.

I had heard that it was a Fundamentalist Baptist church which does not bother me. However, at first one thing about this bothered me. I have only been to one other Fundamentalist Baptist church in my life. This other church was King James Only. This is a doctrine that I am not comfortable with. My personal opinion is that modern Bible versions are just as good if not better than the King James Version in some aspects. But don't get me wrong, I have total respect for those who do believe in King James Only theology. I once believed it myself. During the church service, I looked at a pew Bible and found out that it was a New Revised Standard Version. This indicated to me that the church is not King James Only. If it was, they would not have a New Revised Standard Version as a pew Bible. I was only able to look at one so I do not know if other pew Bibles were different versions or not. I know that some churches have a variety of versions for their pew Bibles.

Another thing that I found about this church that I really like is the fact that they use a mixture of both traditional and contemporary music. I love both traditional and contemporary music so this was ideal to me. They also have a nice choir. In fact, the entire service seemed to be not too formal and not too informal. I liked that.

The one thing that bothered me was not the church's fault at all but my own. Everybody there dresses up very nicely. I don't have a whole lot of nice church clothing to wear so I wore blue jeans and a T-shirt. I probably didn't need to be but I felt rather out of place. I tend to have a hard time fitting in at places in the first place so I felt a little more out of place when I realized that everyone was more dressed up than I was. Most of the women either wore dress pants and a dress shirt or a long dress. One thing that did make me feel good though was I was not made to feel bad about my more casual style of clothing. I do plan on wearing a dressier shirt that my Grandma gave me for the evening service though. Unfortunately, I don't believe I have any dress pants that fit so I'll have to wear blue jeans. But at least I'll be more dressed up than I was this morning. :D

I see nothing wrong with wanting to dress up to go to church. In fact, I would rather dress up to go to church. Church is an important occasion and in my opinion, it's nice to dress up. It's just that all or most of my clothes are casual and I don't have much to dress up with. Unfortunately, I don't have much money either so I can't really afford to buy new clothes at this time. I will be looking at various places though for some inexpensive outfits. I'm sure my Mom or Dad will probably help me out too. That and I know I'll get some new clothes at Christmas.

The Sunday School class was very nice. It was small and the people were very friendly. There was this one lady whom I think was the pastor's wife that was talking to me about the origin of the national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. :)

Well, I just thought I'd let you all know about my experience at a new church. If you have any advice or comments to give, feel free to give it. I would appreciate anything you'd like to say. :)

God Bless,
Holly

Holly,

I'll pray for you over your seeking out a new home church. I'm in the process of it myself, I know its rough.

How did you like the preaching during the service? Was it firmly rooted in the Bible?
Yeah I liked the preaching. My only problem is that I have ADHD and so I have a hard time paying attention and often forget most of the message within a few hours or days after the sermon is done. :sigh: I'll usually remember what the sermon was generally about but I forget what specific points were brought up and such. Thankfully, if I get on Medicaid (which I'm going through the process of getting now) I'll be able to get on medication for my ADHD and I'll be able to pay much more attention. Sunday School is usually much easier for me to pay attention in because it's small groups where individuals get to participate and such. :) Also, I'm not very well grounded in the Bible but the preaching seemed Biblical to me. :D I think I'll keep going here. It seems like a very nice church.

HI, I do not know if this will make you feel better, or not, or just make you laugh... but our Pastor says most people forget a message within 48 hours;)

so it is not just you. All of us have that problem... One thing I do that helps me stay focused is to take notes. Then I can look back and it helps me remember...

Good luck finding a church. I know it can be difficult. I will pray for you.

Not only is this true, but I have a preaching textbook that says God only begins to work through the sermon when it is forgotten.

I remember the first time I went to a church, it was a Catholic church. I didn't feel comfortable there (I was not Christian at the time, and still I am not Catholic) it seemed strange to me then. The first time I went to a Friends meeting (church) was when I was about 6. I liked the silence and the way the missionaries spoke freely when they were moved. It was not a real meeting house, it was made from an old French colonial military baraks (one of the tight ones for police officers) in Algeria that noone had used since the 60s. When I came to the USA, the meeting house was much nicer and peacefull and there were more people. I have been to many Arab Christian churches, Maronite, Coptic, Catholic, and others. I have also been to a few black churches. I like the community they have. The most important thing I think is to find one where you feel the Spirt can speak to you the best and you are most comfortable.

Holly glad you had a great time. Thanks for sharing

I disagree with that statement cause the God has spoken to me during the sermon at times. There has also been countless people that made decisions right after a sermon when it was still fresh on their minds and hearts.
