For the past 10 years my dream vacation has been to attend the Detroit Red Wings training camp in Traverse City, Michigan.
This year my dream came true
Things I've learned at Red Wings training camp:
10. I'd move to Traverse City in a heartbeat
9. I'm planning on this becoming an annual event
8. In many instances the differences between a NHL player and an AHL player are miniscule
7. Shootouts really aren't a bad thing - in fact they're pretty darn exciting (took me a while to come to this conclusion - but we saw 3 of them and really enjoyed them)
6. Tomas Holmstrom is becoming a better player the older he gets (definitely more well rounded)
5. Detroit is in good shape with goaltenders if and when Hasek is hurt and/or retires (Jimmy Howard really is quite good and communicates more with the on ice players than either Hasek or Ozzie)
4. Brian Rafalski is rather small for as physical a player as he is - he plays big
3. Chris Chelios never (emphasis on the never) stops talking - even if there's no one around him, his lips are moving
2. Scotty Bowman is really nice - with his hands full he stuck out his pinky finger so that Joe could shake his hand
1. If Nick Lidstrom gets his stick on the puck in his defensive zone he always clears the zone (that's a "well duh," I realize, but had to throw in something about him - after all, he's Nick Lidstrom)
