  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

At Five O'Clock pm today I put my 7 month old rabbit Mr. Leapus out on the front porch as this is part of it's daily routine and I believe the fresh air and sunlight is good for a bunny. My friend who lives out in the country has many out door rabbits who live in cages all the time, so I have never thought anything about putting my rabbit outside for a few hours. When I returned at 7 pm from the store their was a note on the cage from my neighbor saying that my rabbit had died of apparent dehydration and that she took it to the vet but it still died. I've spoken to her and she said this happened at 6:30, I am going into the vet tomorrow to get more details as this doesn't make sense to me. He had fresh water, shade food, and was only out there for an hour and half. Granted it was hot today but no hotter than yesterday or the day before or anyother day this texas summer. Is this normal? My friends rabbits live in cages outdoors all year long and this doesn't happen, what gives? Anyway, I feel very badly and am hoping tomorrow the vet will tell me it wasn't hypotermia as I feel very bad, but I still don't know how this could have happened with water, shade and a decent wind. This is very sad.

Hello Eric.....I'm very sorry that your bunny died and you're feeling so sad and guilty. I live in Arkansas where it gets extremely hot and humid, too....all the bunnies I've had have always lived outside and made it just fine. I had one really huge bunny that I gave a frozen waterbottle to so that he could keep cool on really bad afternoons. But all the others made it just fine. And you said it was your bunny's routine to be outdoors for a little while every day. So this sounds really strange to me.

Well, there's nothing that can be done now. Just try to not feel so guilty. It wasn't your fault.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. An indoor bunny may not be suited to outdoor living, being moved back and forth he wasn't able to build up the tolerance that a full time outdoor bunny has.
If he was in the sun, direct sunlight, not the shade, a warm Texas day could kill him. His body just wouldn't be able to keep cool enough.
I am so sorry that this has happened.

Eric, This same thing happened to a parakeet of mine many years ago. I never was quite sure what happened. Sorry for your loss. Bunny must have been a fine pet. Had there been any disturbing signs I would guess maybe a dog got bunny.

Praying for you as I type this. birdfriend.

I want to convey to you the "Good News" regarding God's wonderful creation. Your pet thatyou loved so dearly on earth will be in heaven to greet you if you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Read Romans 8:18-23. It just stops short of saying animals will be heaven but alludes strongly to it. Also every desire of your heart will be yours in heaven so if you want your pet, God will raise it from the dead in the twinkling of an eye. There is a website, All Creatures. org (all-creatures.org), run by two dedicated born again Christians, the Hoffman family) who firmly believe God loves His creation dearly and cite numerous Scriptural passages to back up their beliefs.

The Bible tells us that Christ shed His blood that all things in heaven and earth shall be reconciled in peace unto Him so Jesus didn't just die for manking alone (although that was His primary reason for dying) but that all things in heaven and earth shall be reconciled unto Him in peace.

Cheer up your bunny will be there waiting for you along with any other pets you may have lost through the years. Indeed there is Good News for all creation.

Im very sorry :(
I used to have a rabbitry and I know that direct sunlight can kill a rabbit very fast.
But if it had shade, it doesnt make a lot of sense that it had a sunstroke or anything.

My rabbitry wasnt cooled except for a fan and I never had a single rabbit die of heat there.
The only time that I did have 2 die was when I had their cage out in the yard and while we were gone a very strong wind ripped the cover from their cage and the were in direct sunlight for a long while.

I never leave them out for long periods now without checking them.

I have a black netherland dwarf that Im getting rid of.
If you live in NY state within driving distance of Binghamton you are welcome to her :)
Shes about 16 weeks old and we've been calling her Nenwing
PM me if youre interested :)

My wife and I have her and one other one.
We live in a small apt so having 2 rabbits is getting to be a bit much.

Im so sorry about your bunny .

I'm so sorry to hear about that! It wasn't your fault...you did all the right things... we have a rabbit Samson, and the heat is dreadful for rabbits...I heard that in the summer time to put burlap over the cage and keep it wet, another person said to freeze ice like in a milk container and put in in the cage.

I hope that you will try again later!
