My brain needs a change....

I was graduated as master degree in business field, but now i m half retired of that , i m tired of business life, so i m heading for discovering some other potential , so i started writing. Last year i did some poems and i was satisfied. This year i m starting to write fictions based on some life experiences and some fantacies in head. I feel i have a good story for that, but i just can't really make it a novel. I wrote a few chapters already but they all look like a business report. nothing fun or exciting from it even though they r exciting in my head. I just cant find the key to put them on my paper...........
The characters r talking playing around moving their life in my head, but once it comes to the paper, they become pale and boring again, no dialogues, no real color, they r just newspapers and plain narration.
What's wrong of me? I finally feel that it is my thinkingstyle and habits. I was trained as a business leader and sth like that, and i think things in a logical way. I can enjoy movies and good novels, but i cant really make it cuz i m a different brain.

Nothing's wrong with you, it happens to all of us. The best way to improve your writing is just to write, write and write some more. Looks at books you enjoy reading and figure out why they're enjoyable. That might help you put colour in your writing. Also, if you are having trouble with your characters, trying doing a character sketch. Figure out the appearance, personality, way of speaking etc until the character comes to life, and keep it consistent throughout your writing.

But the best thing you can do is practice. And just enjoy doing it.

there isnt really anything worng with you, youre just used to that buisness format. my best advice is to read lots of novels, who write like you would like to. get into that creative mindset. and remember when youre writing youre telling a story, add detials, and most importantly: break the rules; just because microsoft word corrected you dosent mean they know what looks good. emotion is key to writing, dont be afraid to let the barriers fall and rite about something so redicilous noone else could think it up, ever. those stories are usually good. if youre writing a novel, i presume i dont have to tell you to have a basic outline about what the characters are going to do etc. if you get used to writing creatively it will become second hand, then you will become focused on not using the same adjective twice, things like that, but for now, just practice, and again dont be afraid to obliterate the rules.

I'm glad that you wrote this post... I too am trained more in technical writing and find it hard to switch gears although on the weekends I find it much easier.... Good advice
