I don't recall the same responses. In fact, the typical war hawks were itching to "do something about it" and pushing for the US to provide "lethal military aid" to Ukraine, and it was the progressives saying "no, it's not our fight, we don't want to escalate tensions with Russia"

NATO has proven themselves to be "a little more aggressive" than you describe on a number of incidents.

NATO has a history of, under the guise of "providing reactionary defense forces", going beyond that scope, and trying to convert the non-westernized counties they're operating in, to westernized ones aligned with North American and Western Euro interests.

a) there were a lot of people that didn't realize that the annexation of Crimea was a direct seizure of power by military means by putin and the russian army
b) 8 years of direct evidence of russia attacking our countries with active measures.
