  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Everyone enjoys some kind of music, but everyone has different preferences. If we do listen to secular music, we should make sure that the lyrics aren't contrary to Christian beliefs. A love song may be neutral, but a song about doing drugs or committing violence is never okay to listen to. But even if the lyrics are "Christian," doesn't automatically mean its okay to listen to. UnderOath is a good example (screamo). A few years ago they stopped calling themselves a Christian band. I am not surprised. I used to listen to that kind of stuff as a teenager. "Christian Death Metal" is an oxymoron, and it had to take me being thrown in a mosh pit and almost hurt to realize that. It's a group of musicians trying to be too much like the world. The crowd wasn't being edified, but just partying and acting wild. The fruit was bad.
Proper Christian music should be theologically sound, and the music should exalt Christ not the band. At some of these Christian concerts, I wonder who the crowd is really worshipping...

Do you enjoy music?
I enjoy classical music.
Others, not so much, though there were some good pop songs around when I was a child.
Do you listen to Christian and secular music?
Music, on its own, can be neither Christian, nor secular - it is a series of notes, arranged into patterns, chords and so on.
If you're talking about songs; it depends what they are and what the words say.
How is the proper and improper Christian music?
I don't know about "improper" Christian music.
I like Handel's Messiah, Vivaldi's Gloria, Haydn's creation, Godspell, Joseph and his amazing technicolour dream coat and Roger Jones' musicals.

Taking them 1 at a time..

Do you enjoy music? - Yes

Do you listen to Christian and secular music? - Yes

How is the proper and improper Christian music? - It depends on who you ask.

I've seen people leave churches over music. Usually because whatever music being played was not to their particular taste (either too new, too traditional, out of the wrong hymnal, etc).
I worked with one church years ago. Their bylaws were written many many years ago. In those bylaws was a clause that guitars and drums were not allowed in music played at church. I do not agree with that - but there were those that did.

Personally, I like a mix from traditional hymns, to country / bluegrass gospel all the to many of the contemporary songs. Some will say that's ok. Some will say that is not ok.. and I'm ok with that.
