Music....Whatcha Listening To?

What kind of music do you expose your kids to?

Someone in a different thread mentioned a music club (I think it was Crofter), so I thought it would be interesting to find out what other parents have playing around the house.

Music is an important part of our lives, and even before our son was born, there was always at least background music, whether at home or in the car. Typically it would be jazz, classical, or 'praise and worship' CD's. With our son, we've just added to it with some of his kid's music too. In fact, in our cars' CD players, 3 slots are his, and 3 slots are 'ours'.

A number of studies claim that understanding music and its theories, particularly classical, has some correlation to excelling in the sciences, such as math and chemistry.

So what's playing in the background now, and why?

Around this house we listen to a variety of music.
The radios are generally tuned to a local contempory Christian station.
On the main stereo I pick Celtic (Christian or traditional), classical, Broadway, and on occasion, classic rock and pop from the 60-80's. My husband would opt for country .
My 12 yr old and 9 yr old have praise and worship CDs that they love, as well as some of the Disney line (movie tracks, kid oriented collections etc.). All the stuff the kids listen to has been screened by me for language and themes.
The most adult thing my 12 yr old has is an Ian Anderson CD -- she plays flute and wanted something modern to aspire to.

I usually have CCM or praise playing, when the music is on. I like that because you don't have to cover your kids ears when some bad lyrics come on. My kids like it too and they like to sing along sometimes.

I guess I don't put a whole lot of thought into it. We listen to what we like, and what we like is good stuff

In the car it's practically always a Christian contemporary station. In the house, it's usually classical or soothing new age stuff (like Enya) or music with nature sounds, also soothing celtic music. That's what I play every day during naptime...knocks them right out. I LOVE oldies...from 50's to 80's/90's, so when we're doing chores around the house, I put on some of that stuff. They especially love the old soul stuff, like Solomon Burke, the Temptations, and Otis Redding. Man, they have good taste.

And if I'm in the mood, they have to suffer through my obsession with Bon Jovi.

It sounds like our house, less the country music! We like Christian music--Newsboys, Smalltown Poets, dctalk, etc., Celtic--I think I have more of this than anything, swing, Sinatra, and now we're starting to listen to some Japanese flute. The kids have Disney, and like Wierd Al and Ray Stevens. Quite a range about here. You never know what will be on.

LOL. I dare say most of us have some measure of 80's rock in us. I wonder sometimes how our kids would view our musical tastes when they are teens. Bon Jovi, Rush, Van Halen etc. are/were bands who actually know how to play their instruments well, unlike many of today's stuff (IMHO!)

My son (4yo) loves the Spiderman theme song, but the harder rock version by Aerosmith.

We listen as a household to lots of different types of music. I mainly listen to contemporary Christian, praise & worship, classical, jazz, big band/swing. My husband listens to all that with just about anything except rap or death metal.

We basically expose our children to many types of music. Our daughter loves many of the children's worship songs. Our son is just a baby...so, we'll have to wait and see for him.

All we ever listen to is The Wiggles. He sleeps to a kids hymn and worship CD, and occasionally we will put on Radio Disney in the car.

Sometimes I put on my Swing Praise music and dance with him. He also likes Shania Twain. He is sooo like his daddy there.

Ah, the 80's....when music was musical. I miss the guitar riffs, good lyrics (did you know you can use RUSH to teach English/literature classes?), decent singers and the HAIR!!

Couldn't agree more! As for Rush, which song in particular? I used to drum (rather badly I might add), and emulated Neil Peart.

As an aside, I used to love loud music; now sometimes it can be too loud. Sure sign of age?

I read an article a few years ago about a high school English course that was using the lyrics from a number of Rush songs to teach poetry, creative writing and as a gateway to some to the literature and styles used in the music. "Red Barchetta" for example was tied to some of the Sci-fi classics dealing with over tyranical governmental systems. If you read the lyrics of many Rush songs you will find them to be very intelligent and well constructed.

I listen to everything. Most of the time it is oldies but mainly 80s. IO love the Newsboys listen to them a lot to and listen to a lot of praise and cotempory christian music. love Phil Joel to... Life is Fragile its an awesome song when you are down. The first tiem I heard it I balled my hubby and I were going through a diffucult time (we were engaged) at that time adn it seemed to help him forgive me and me him.

Hey everyone!

The radio station we listen to is K-Love. We also listen to different kids CD's . The favorites right now are Mickey Mouse and Veggie Tales.

I LOOOOVVVEEE music. So do my children. I mostly listen to Gospel and Praise and worship. I love Isreal Houghton and New Breed right now and Lakewood church here in Houston. Every now and then I get in the mood for some oldies like Luther and Al Green and Marvin Gaye. My son is strictly praise and worship, his own doing because I am very liberal when it comes to the arts. My daughter is somewhat like me, if it has a nice beat and a good rhythm she will listen to it.

As an extension to this OP, what are some of the praise and worship songs that's sung at your church services?

I go to Vineyard, and while I enjoy the P&W service, I'm getting 'bored' as mostly only Vineyard songs are sung, with a few oldies sprinkled here and there.

So those that have 'contemporary' music at church, what are they? Hillsong stuff, Vineyard, Passion, Maranatha / Hosanna etc? Any particularly 'good' new song that you've begun to sing?

We sing Shout To the Lord occassionally. I LOVE that song...especially the Hillsongs version.
