I think it depends on the lyrics. That "Take me to church" song that was out of the pop charts a few months ago was pretty sacrilegious!

As turtles are genetically predisposed to return to Galapagos, I turned 30 and started listening to country music...I hated country for most of my life, and now it's about all I listen to.

I listen to Christian radio but every now and then I think of an old song and play it and think of God, while it did not mean that to me the first time I heard it, it does now. In your eyes by Peter Gabriel he wrote the song about kissing a girl, when I hear it i think of God, some parts go, I get so tried some times, days pass and this emptiness fills my soul, when I want to run I drive off in my car. These lines relate to how I feel and how I run from God, I think how the running got me here and often when i am getting beat up really bad, i want just to run from God, and I do. Then comes the next part of the song which goes but i always come back to the place you are. I think how I always come back to God even though I run. see how it fits. the song is about love, Peter wrote as love of a woman, but love can be applied to God. Also song goes in your eye i see the doorway of thousands churches. I think about my salvation when hearing this. So you see songs mean what you want them to, the good ones anyways. That is the key to a hit. It means something to everyone they can personalize it.

I do agree music today seems awfully dark and its hard to find God in any of it, but Christian music has much improved since the 90's. I get moved by christian music i rock out. i work out to it even. It can sound like rock or be blues, or again sound like pop modern. God filled the hole that was created by bad music. Not everything has to be Christians music i have heard people say modern christian music is not worshiping God, even though its all about God. they think you have to do the old Amazing grace and when they take that song make it up beat or set it to rock they say that is the devil, no its not its all about God. That is what i meant by music is not the devil. We should celebrate our differences. if you want to know what I am speaking of turn on k love for a week, you can find them on the internet and find a station in your area or listen online, though this is a bad week because they are doing a pledge drive. but check it out see what i speak of.

Im kinda weary of mainstream Christian music. I often wonder (the pessimist in me) if they are simply exploiting faith and an Christianity to make a buck. Reminds me of the Faith +1 episode of south park from my youth. :p

if you listen to it you would see they are not, you can make a lot more money in the world music than you can in the Christian world of music. That is what I mean people hear a song about God in modern times they say oh that is not God. Who said music has to be only one way? The metal christian music well that is just not the energy of God, I call it death metal because its all about death. But there are good modern Christians songs. It is a bit funny though you are weary of Christian music yet listen to country, which is worldly music, what country group just wrote a song about two girls kissing? and you question a song which says God your my strength my rock i can do nothing with out you? Many Christians songs are based on real bible verses.

I couldn't get through the first ten words! Wow!
When the music overpowers the words the song is useless to invoke any kind of worship. That is the problem with much of the modern praise and worship songs today. The music overpowers the words and sets the tone of the heart toward dancing instead of falling on your face before the Triune God.

It's about exploitation and motivation. I expect the world to sing about the world, even if they mention God or Jesus several times. I question mainstream Christian music artists for the same reason I question Joel Olstein's intentions as a minister. He has also said that "God is my strength and my rock." hmmmmmmm

And why are you going to make a thread entitled "Music is not the devil" and then criticize me for listening to country. Come on bro ;)

Exploiting the faith of others to make money just rubs me the wrong way.

I do agree with 98 about nonchristians and Christian music. Music is definitely not the devil, but music does express worldviews and just like paintings, I can decide outside of the boundaries of church which I like and don't like. Within Christian music theology is being made. I'm almost confident Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol could make it on a Worship Song list and hands would be raised in worship. That's how much faith I have in Christian and their Christian music on whether they care about theology.

Exactly. I can not stand it when another Christian tells me what secular music I should or should not listen to or which Christian music is uplifting or not uplifting. My beliefs guide my decision and not anyone elses beliefs.

In a sense I do agree with this. People's beliefs guide their decisions. I want to know the foundation of people's beliefs. I'm a curious cat.

;) ok 98 i do believe you caught me being hypocrite. :p and your right.

Joel is a false prophet, before he went into ministry he was motivational speaker and was quoted as saying if you want to get rich go into ministry and he is rich, but what good did it do him he had a very short where he had everything he want and forever he pay for it and suffer. I remember that when I see people getting rich off God.

Did you listen to the songs I posted? Just listen to them and tell me you do not feel God in them?

I think music is like people it can be good or bad, it depends on the person making it I guess. I love the guitar parts from AC/DC and use to love their music but the closer i get to God the less i can relate to the lyrics. but the music can still pump me up. They have song highway to hell i never would listen to. I think the more we mature as Christian the better musical choices we can make. Like the first song i posted by five steps, that song spoke to me.

Because I know how false doctrine spreads, I'm uncomfortable with this language. Mormons feel a burning in their bossom to prove their way is true. Society does what feels right. I think the church has used the word, "feeling" or "experience" to mean what society uses, and you wrote, to "pump them up" which then they raise their hands in church.

Truth is not a feeling. The Holy Spirit moves in truth, not feelings. If the music speaks clear truth and your raising hands, then there isn't a problem.
