Does music have any specific spiritual significance to you?

Are there ceirtain kinds of music you shun because they go against your spirituality (I once knew a new ager who wouldn't listen to metalica because it "lowered his vibrational frequency" - despite addmiting he liked and enjoyed it)?

Does some music make you feel more connected to spiritual things, what music?

Do you beleive trance is a valid spiritual experience, or way to be more in tune to spiritual experience, or is it just a physiological/psychological response?

Would you say that modern music can induce trance states (in people who are stone cold clean and sober)? Do you feel some enviroments are better suited to such alterations in consiousness than others?

Do you think that the words to a particular peice of music effect how it effects a person? Is the effect of the words equal to the effect of the music?

I do not like heavy metal or hip hop music so fast paced I can't understand the words. Both leave me  as in "now what was that all about".
Does some music make you feel more connected to spiritual things, what music?
Yes. New Age, Classical, Choral, chanting (like Gregorian) and tribal drumming music connect me spiritually.

Do you beleive trance is a valid spiritual experience, or way to be more in tune to spiritual experience, or is it just a physiological/psychological response?
I think trance is a vital part of some peoples spiritual experience. I do not trust trance work enough to allow myself to go into one but I respect that type of experience.

Yes fast and high pitched music can create a trance. A concert is a great place to see that happen. I think environments with the natural surrondings are better. More tribal.

Do you think that the words to a particular peice of music effect how it effects a person? Is the effect of the words equal to the effect of the music?
Words are powerful. Words have a way of connecting to us and I think that words from music can have that impact on a person. People hear a lyric and they can relate to what the singer is singing about and they connect to the song. I do not think the power of the words is the same as the power of the music. The words connect to our hearts and minds the music connects to our spirit.

Music has a profound effect on me. Spirituality is something I equate with emotion, and songs do very much influence my emotions. For instance, the song quoted currently in my signature, Pippin's song sung in the Lord of the Rings makes me very calm, makes me wonder what's beyond this world and feel more a part of things beyond just society and the rush of life. Other music does that as well, Sarah MacLachlan, Enya, etc. If I am angry I like Tool and Marilyn Manson and those songs make me feel like I'm not alone, but I don't consider things other then down to earth stuff when I listen to them. Does that make sense?

Yes indeed. Music is instrumental to connecting with the Divine.

None, so long as it’s music and not just noise. So rap doesn’t qualify. :D

I listen to trance and house music to get into an altered state of consciousness.

Instead of using drugs, which is dangerous, music is the best and safest way to get into an altered state of consciousness to connect with the Gods. Modern trance and house music are ideal for this.

I seldom listen to music with words. I find words distracting.

Native American music, especially with the flute. The songs tell stories
within themselves. I use it to wind down of a night after my bookwork
is done and my kiddos are asleep, and I can find a friend here (or other
BB's).

My tastes are diverse. It's not the artist, or the style, it's the songs themselves. Some music motivates me before work, some motivates
me to work-out, some relaxes me, some helps me appreciate what I
treasure most.

Do you beleive trance is a valid spiritual experience, or way to be more in tune to spiritual experience, or is it just a physiological/psychological response?
When I was totally secular in nature, I attributed it to psychology. When I attend the seasonal ceremonies of my ancestors, I truly feel connected
to a higher power.

Lyrics are different to me. Some artists help me realize not everyone
loves their Mother or came from a happy childhood, some artists remind
me that I am a hero in my daughters eyes, some artists remind me that
there is more to life than just myself.

Modern music is not very useful in this manner, for me.
When I need "mind-clearing" music I use atmospherical music...like the background tracks on PC games (PC games like diablo2, silent hill, warcraft, etc.) either that or I plug my keyboard up to my PC and make a decent track for meditation.

Not really. Even christmas music gives me a more "good will towards men" feeling of outward kindness than any spiritual feeling.

Trance, i believe, can be experienced on several levels. In deep meditation while listening to a soothing music, yes it can be spiritual. Listening to bob marley and smoking a lil bit... not so spiritual :p

There is a whole style of music known as Trance that is made just for that kind of experience. Its a branch of techno that i greatly enjoy. I always like listening to trance in rushhour traffic, helps keep the obscenities down ;)

Words can affect how it affects a person, but i personally dont read into them as much as the rifts and chords that make up the music of the song

I work with music as a medium for attaining trance a lot. I also find that humming and singing various tones can be very calming or very rousing, depending on the desired effect. I used to have to have certian kinds of music to attain trance, but now, if I make and effort I can even trance to my boyfriend's horrible metal death music and find a happy place (that took some doing I'll tell you :) )

mm yes. i would definitely say that music can be spiritual. I was reading a book a while back called Sacred Sound and one interesting fact in it was that every culture/religion in the world used music or sound in some way that was sacred to them.

and with everything in our realm of existence being made up of energy, sound is a powerful way to increase our vibratory patterns.

:) i often use music as a spiritual escape. the type i use depends upon my mood. I love many types of music. I find Lounge/Ambient to be great for meditating. I also love Nakai's flute music. occasionally i just HAVE to listen to the Beatles too ;)
