"It is no wonder that many biologists will simply refuse to debate creationists or I.D.ers," [former biology professor Dr. Durkee] said, using the abbreviation for intelligent design, a cousin of creationism. "It is as if they aren't listening."
If that ain’t Truth, I don’t know what is.

Well, that's what happens when you pick your battles carefully and only fight the ones you can win.

I note in that article that Dr. Allmon, who directs the Paleontological Research Institution, an affiliate of Cornell University, talks of two types of creationist, and describes one type as a "thinking creationists who want to know answers, and they are willing to listen".

How come I've never met (or encountered, or read about) any of those?

When I was working in the paleontology exhibit of the New Jersey State Museum, it happened a few times that creationists showed up there and wanted to debate about this sort of thing. But I and the curator didn’t really mind it, since he we felt like one of the museum’s purposes was to show how the physical evidence supported evolutionary theory.

I’d say that’s what I used to be. I was a creationist until I was about 13 years old, at which point I learned enough about science to decide that evolution was a more likely explanation for life’s current diversity.

I guess the reason why I continue debating with creationists is because I hope that at least some of the people I debate with will end up being the same way that I was.

Because thinking creationists don't stay creationists for very long.

Those are theistic creationists who accept evolution.

That's not entirely fair. ChrisS and Fuz!on were in that category when they first came here; that they are no longer evolution deniers says something about what happens to many thinking creationists, but there you go.

Then there's Kurt Wise. Honest. He believes in YEC but is totally open that it's a faith position, not a scientific one. I can respect that. What I can't respect is trying to make it a scientific position and haranguing museum staff, teachers, university lecturers and so on.

As someone said, I wonder how many of the creationists in the article are now proudly boasting that they talked to an evolutionist for 45 minutes and she couldn't answer their questions?

Because you're more likely to meet the other kind he talks about. The proselytizing loon is many times more likely to confront you than the more passive, interested people. If you look around, you'll find people with honest questions trying to understand evolution. Look at Fledge, who posts on these boards. Fledge is often asking honest questions in hopes of understanding. Still a creationist, I presume, but he's not rabidly attacking us.

The sad this is, the old woman probably thought she had won because she could simply excuse herself and turn the creationists off.

My point was that they were harassing an old woman. Is that the Christian thing to do?

Perhaps they should fight fire with fire and arrange a trip to a creationist museum and ask a bunch of questions.

Or arrange for the creationists to go to the Holocaust Museum and ask the director how the Jews faked the Holocaust.

Or arrange for the creationists to go to NASA and ask scientists how they faked the moon landings.

No, it's just at some point in time it's simply futile to argue with idiots. Isn't there a Bible verse about "throwing your pearls to swine"?

Futz (still wondering about those 4400 genera of the Brachiopoda God really didn't care for...)
