  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One only needs to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist once per day- receiving more than once grants you no extra grace: for all grace is fully present during your first communion of the day.

However, Priests, Deacons, and altar servers are required to receive at every Mass.

As for attending multiple Masses during day... definitely! Mass is the most perfect form of Worship. Why not, if you have the chance?

a note that receiving the Eucharist twice in one day is maximum. :)

Yup

I went to Bosco, went to Mass with the community, but I thought you weren't allowed to go more than once, so I abstained till later that night (cause I knew I'd be receiving then)

After Mass, Fr. Francois (Knowing that I'd be going to Mass that evening) said to me "You may receive twice... the limit was to stop earlier abuses... you will be going to Mass twice, so you can receive both times"

I have always been under the impression that the limit has to do with fasting.
Midnight until the first communion is the tradition - then what do you do?
Not eat then either until the 2nd one?
So, really most people would improve their piety more by holding to the fast and receiving once, rather than skipping the fast and receiving twice not fully prepared.

Nowadays, however, the fast has been reduced to one hour before reception.

Official doctrine is this: You may only receive Holy Communion ONCE a day unless there is as special Mass (a funeral, wedding, etc).

It is a sacrilege to ordinarily receive Holy Communion more than once a day with exception to the above circumstances.

Further, in the Latin rite, one must fast from everything but water and medicine for a full hour before Mass.

In the Eastern rites, it is generally expected that one shall fast from the entire night before until receiving Holy Communion.

This is why the East still has coffee and lunch hour after Divine Liturgy. Hahaha.

And what's this about, "fasting from the Eucharist?"
Don't unless you get permission from a Spiritual Director.
There are amazing graces given to us through reception of Holy Communion. Jesus wants to dwell in us so that we may dwell in Him and the Father. Do not deny Him.

Well that stinks like alot. *counts on fingers how many times I've been Sacrilegious without knowing it*

Do you have references by any chance?

I see no special requiments in cannon law for the second mass except that you have to particbate i.e. you can't just show up at communion time.

As always see your paster, spirtual director, cannon lawyer, bishop for how cannon law applys to you.

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.
Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.
§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
§3. While the danger of death lasts, it is recommended that holy communion be administered often, but on separate days.

Can. 905 §1. A priest is not permitted to celebrate the Eucharist more than once a day except in cases where the law permits him to celebrate or concelebrate more than once on the same day.
§2. If there is a shortage of priests, the local ordinary can allow priests to celebrate twice a day for a just cause, or if pastoral necessity requires it, even three times on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

The previous poster was incorrect. That has been changed. You can receive TWICE per day, so long as each time you are participating in the mass.

This is what I have been taught as well. However, I believe priests are not limited to this rule, seeing as they may celebrate Mass three times in one day and are required to receive if they celebrate.

that is not my understanding at all. It's twice a day, without specification.

I might be wrong though-- do you know where it is in Canon Law? (Edited, becuase I should have read the ENTIRE thread before responding :) )

No, actually you just must attend two different Masses. So if you went to daily Mass Saturday morning and then the Vigil Mass Sat. evening, that would be perfectly licit.

The limit to receiving was to prevent abuses in medieval cathedrals in which several Masses would be going on at each side altar and people would do what is known as "chasing the bells." They would follow the consecration bells from altar to altar trying to "up their Jesus intake."
