  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello,
I have been a student of the Bible for many years. I did a are on series of writings in the last three years. I have decided to share these with others at this time. I tried to make them interesting. They are on the lengthy side, due to including the scriptures in the writing, for clear reference and consideration. The points are my own considerations, not a denominational agenda.

Holy Spirit-the Key to Anointing

John 16:13-15
"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He
will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and
shall disclose [it] to you. All things that the
Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes
of Mine, and will disclose [it] to you."

The essence of the following study deals with
our relationship with the Holy Spirit. If it is seen
as one of three embodied entities operating from
headquarters in heaven, standing along with Jesus
and the Father; then we would only expect to follow
it's directives. The following writing explores if
the
Holy Spirit is a free thinking/acting individual.
Perhaps it is a cooperating force that sets out to
establish the Word of Christ, along with relaying
messages, love and teaching of Christ. This is
indicated in the scripture above. If we are given
authority by Christ to partake of his directive
ability to make things on earth as they are in
Heaven, and make choices doing it; then the Holy
Spirit is to act on our directive.

To be a follower of Jesus, or Christ like we need
to understand the role, purpose, and function of the
Holy Spirit. Who was Jesus?

Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with
the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing
good and healing all who were oppressed by the
devil, for God was with Him. All scripture: New King
James Version

Christ means anointed one. Anointing was the
process of pouring oil, representing the Holy
Spirit. Jesus was a blend of humanity overshadowed by
the Holy
Spirit (HS from now on) yielding great power to do
good and miracles. It does not say that Jesus and
the Holy Spirit teamed up to do some good. The HS
was
poured out or added to Jesus and he used this power
to make things on earth as they are in heaven. There
is a great commission to be like the Anointed one, so
we need to operate and believe as he did to get the
same results.

John 14:12 - Show Context "Most assuredly, I say
to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do
he
will do also; and greater works than these he will
do, because I go to My Father.

Mark 16:17
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My
name THEY will cast out demons; they will speak with
new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if
they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt
them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will
recover."

Mt 16:19 - And I will give you the keys of the
kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth
will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on
earth will be loosed in heaven."

The point of the following inquiry is to discover
the biblical nature of the HS so we can operate with
it correctly, and work with it as Christ did. If we
think it is a personality in command as part of the
Trinity will we ever expect it to follow our
authority in Christ? Can we expect it to blend with
our choices, and with the will of God to fulfill the
above commission? Here is how the apostles operated
with and described the HS.

1Cor 2:4 And my speech and my preaching were not
with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

Acts 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these
words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard
the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who
believed were astonished, as many as came with
Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been
poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard
them
speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter
answered, 47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these
should not be baptized who have received the Holy
Spirit just as we have?" 48 And he commanded them to
be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked
him to stay a few days. 32 This Jesus God has raised
up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being
exalted to the right hand of God, and having received
from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He
poured out this which you now see and hear.

Ac 6:3 - Therefore, brethren, seek out from among
you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy
Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this
business;

Ac 8:17 - Then they laid hands on them, and they
received the Holy Spirit

The HS is poured out, received, infilled, and
received by the laying of hands and the people
responded. Can you do these things with a person?
Even with Jesus, can you transfer him by hands, or
does he fall on people. No, only a power is described
this way, not a personality. Jesus is the authority
and
covering that we ask the Father to establish things
on our behalf. When we ask of the Father in Jesus's
name it is seen as Christ himself asking. The Holy
Spirit is the power/agent that establishes biblical
requests that are in agreement with the general will
and scripture of the Father. Here are the given tasks
of the HS.

Lu 12:12 - For the Holy Spirit will teach you in
that very hour what you ought to say.

Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance.
Ac 4:31 - And when they had prayed, the place
where they were assembled together was shaken; and
they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they
spoke the word of God with boldness.
Fruits of the Spirit
Romans 15:13 - Show Context Now may the God of
hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy
Spirit.

Gift of prophesy ( to make known the word of God
concerning present and future events)

Ac 21:11 - When he had come to us, he
took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and
said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews
at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and
deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.
Here the HS is given credit for talking similar to
an angel speaking and relaying the word from the
Father or Jesus.

In Revelation chapter 3 we find this saying

20. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If
anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will
come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21.
To him
who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My
throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father
on His throne. 22. He who has an ear, let him hear
what the
Spirit says to the churches.
This is in the context of words dictated to an angel
and direct warnings from Christ. It seems to say that
the Spirit simply repeats and reminds of Christs words
to empower us to apply them to our life. The question
is there evidence the the HS acts independently, has
free will or a personality? Or is the HS more of an
agent and general enabler?

John 16:13-15-"But when He, the Spirit of truth,
comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He
will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He
hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what
is to come (prophecy). He shall glorify Me; for He
shall take of Mine, and shall disclose [it] to you.
All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I
said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose [it] to
you."

If the HS has a form of personality it is because
it relays the words, thoughts, and intents of Christ.
The HS is also used to seal, sanctify,
convict, comfort, convict, pray in the HS, bears
witness to our spirit,

Romans 8:26 - Likewise the Spirit also helps in our
weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for
as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession
for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Romans 8:27 - Now He who searches the hearts knows
what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes
intercession for the saints according to the will of
God

Is not Christ our mediator, intercessor and high
priest? We are told above that the HS only says what
Christ says.

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High
Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the
Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

To have fellowship with the Spirit or the mind of
the Spirit is available because the HS is the
interface between us and Christ. We fellowship with
Christ in truth and in Spirit. Who is the mind and who
do you hear from when you hear from the HS?

John 16:13-15-"But when He, the Spirit of truth,
comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He
will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He
hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what
is to come. He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of
Mine, and shall disclose [it] to you. All things that
the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He
takes of Mine, and will disclose [it] to you."

Continuing on with a believers interaction with the
HS.
Mark 16:17 And these signs will follow those who
believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they
will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up
serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will
by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the
sick, and they will recover."

1Co 2:4 - And my speech and my preaching were not
with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power,

1Th 1:5 - For our gospel did not come to you in word
only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and in
much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were
among you for your sake.

Hebrews 2:3 how shall we escape if we neglect so
great a salvation, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those
who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with
signs and wonders with various miracles and gifts of
the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

I took the liberty of removing a few commas from
the last two scriptures, as there is no punctuation in
the original Greek. The point of these scriptures is
that we have an assignment to follow the general will
of God. For example: to lay hands on the sick and they
shall recover Mark 16:18.Then when we are obedient we
by faith expect the Holy Spirit to demonstrate the
word and promise of God. If it is not demonstrated,
our faith is weak.

Acts 10:38 Jesus healed ALL who were oppressed by
the Devil.
Has the will of God changed or is our faith too weak?
Here are some other real promises.

Mark 11:22 So Jesus answered and said to them, "Have
faith in God. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever
says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be cast into
the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but
believes that those things he says will be done, he
will have whatever he says.

God is not looking for robots. The anointing over
Jesus was a blending of the free will, personality,
humanity, and compassion with the power of the HS to
establish things on earth as they were in Heaven,
miraculously.

Consider the water into wine miracle.

John 2:3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother
of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." 4 Jesus
said to her, "Woman, what does your concern have to do
with Me? My hour has not yet come."

Jesus indicated that he had no specific heavenly
directive to do a miracle. Out of compassion and free
will he put into action the provision and power
available to believers to make the wine. My point is
that to exercise our faith under the anointing we are
granted a degree of choice how to apply our gift of
authority.

Mt 16:19 - And I will give you the keys of the
kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will
be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth
will be loosed in heaven.

Keys are small items that release large forces. Not
that our part is so major or credit worthy, even if it
is just limited to praying. It is a releasing of major
power. Jesus did not just give the example of just
praying to get things done, he employed many
interesting methods such as rubbing mud in peoples
eyes.
If we do not freely act upon the previously authorized
general promises and directives of God, and expect the
Holy Spirit to establish and preform what we say, then
we are not acting in faith. If we wait for the
personality of the Holy Spirit to replace our faith
and directive, and always lead, then we will be
ineffective. If we can support our request by
scripture and we ask for good gifts, such as gifts of
the Spirit, then we should expect to receive in faith.
James 1:5 - If any of you lacks wisdom, let him
ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without
reproach, and it will be given to him.

We ask of all things of the Father and the Spirit
makes them so. We ask in Jesus name because the
clothes us in His righteousness to be worthy to ask.
Jesus gave us his authority to ask and expect. Mark
11:23 does not limit the things that we can ask for as
we operate under the anointing so our mind is in one
accord with the mind of Christ. If Christ could ask
for drink to keep the party going, how many other
things may God find important?

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
You need to take the word of God and do powerful
things with the Spirit.
Is the Holy Spirit a personality? Does it make free
decisions independently? Just because it is referred
to as a he, this is not conclusive.

Proverb 3:13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And
the man who gains understanding 14. For her proceeds
are better than the profits of silver, And her gain
than fine gold.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of
her, And happy are all who retain her.

Proverbs 1:20 Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises
her voice in the open squares. 21 She cries out in the
chief concourses, F2 At the openings of the gates in
the city She speaks her words: 22 "How long, you
simple ones, will you love simplicity?

Inspiration continues for many verses personifying
wisdom. Wisdom of the Lord is similar to the Spirit of
the Lord as it instructs, edifies, brings to
remembrance, gives guidance, and enables. Not that
they are the same thing, just as a literal device to
personify an attribute of God was common. Even the
many names of God were personifications pointing to
the many aspects of the same God (example: El Shaddai,
the many breasted provider). Wisdom was not a
independent entity, only a facility or expression of a
never changing God.
The HS even has many names, not that there is 3o
different HS, just literary tools to help us
understand Holy things in the human realm.
Masculine pronouns are used in reference to the Holy
Spirit despite the fact that "Spirit" (Greek--pneuma)
is neuter (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:8, 13f,
Greek--ekeinos, literally, that One).

How about the many scriptures about the unforgiven
about sinning against the Holy Spirit? Here is the
Holy Spirit's purposes.

John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to
your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go
away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I
depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has
come, He will convict the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they
do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I
go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of
judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

The Spirit has the purpose of bringing conviction and
repentance. If you resist and rebel against the
convicting power, then any sin will never be repented
of, so of course it will be unforgiven.

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and
that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not
marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound
of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where
it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.

We are not told that the HS ever had flesh. It was
pored out, fell on, compared to the wind, but nobody
was ever shown a bodily form or vision as with Christ
in heavenly places. It appeared as a dove and cloven
tongues of fire, was this a divine incarnation? Was
the HS sent as an incarnation, clothed in corruptible
dove flesh?

To have a biblical soul Genesis says God combined the
dust with the breath and get a living soul. A soul is
capable of free will and independent thinking. The
scriptures may not be definitive, but I read that the
HS only says what Christ says, and established what
Christ willed.

Genesis1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and
darkness was on the face of the deep. And the
Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the
waters.

Does this make you think of a body flying around like
superman? The purpose of the HS was very similar to
the spirit of the Lord that gave breath or life in
Genesis and the spirit that raised Christ from the
dead, that now lives in us.

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of
the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath
(spirit) of life; and man became a living being.

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from
the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies
through His Spirit who dwells in you.

The anointing or Spirit filling in Christ and his
followers might be thought about in the above
scriptures explain. The father is the creator and
sustainer of all things. Christ was the solid,
incarnated form, an ambassador to describe eternal
things in primitive words.

In the old testament the oil represented the HS. It
was poured into the lampstand.

Revelation 2: 5 Remember therefore from where you have
fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will
come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its
place--unless you repent.

It could be said that the lampstand was a symbol of
the body of Christ that the oil of the Spirit was
poured into and the light was given to the world, by
the fire.
To remove the lampstand is to say that they will be
removed from the body of Christ and the Spirit
removed.

In modern times, a light bulb is the solid part. The
Spirit was poured out, or flows like a river of living
water, like the wind, effects are seen but not It.
This is like the electricity that combines with the
solid bulb and gives the light (of the world).
Electricity is the force, power behind a power tool. A
switch is a small unit that releases great power to be
directed (prayer).
A disciple is a unique unit or vessel made in Christ's
image. When the Spirit illuminates it it will have a
unique tint. This is from the blending of the soul's
uniqueness with the power of God. This is how we
become Christ like or anointed by the power of the
Holy Spirit, to be able to speak forth (key) faith
filled holy power and have heaven and earth respond.

It would be foolish to pray that God preform things
that he has given authority for us to command into
reality. It is faithless and confusing to not believe
that the HS will act on the authority given to us. For
example if Christ said YOU shall cast out demons, and
lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Why
would you pray Lord if it is your will please cast out
demons, and if you feel like it heal somebody. He has
given us the keys and switch to release the resources
and power of Heaven.

We need to pray with scriptural actions, authority,
faith, and expectation of result. We need to know what
to pray for and the general will of God by abiding in
Christ and heavenly places through communion and
worship.

I noticed that the Bible is very lengthy also. The reason the post is long is due to the reposted scriptures included. I guess if you want summaries, abstracts and sound bytes, maybe the entertainment channel would be a better place to study from.
Perhaps the title would be all you are looking for, the writing brings into question the idea that the Holy Spirit is a is an individual free acting entity. I guess you would have to read the rest if you wanted line by line, precept upon precept, supporting evidence.

I think brevity at times is a great way to start a conversation and keep it going. Most of the time very long posts are wearying and tend to quench the spirit of lively discussion. But thats my opinion perhaps not yours. I think one or two key scriptures would suffice in making your point and also make room for others to participate.
