  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The other night some friends and I were sitting around talking, and we started listing movies we thought had redeeming social value, meaning they told a story that had a meaningful message, taught you something about life or made you more aware of an issue/historical situation/culture/etc.

So what movies do you think have had redeeming social value?

I'll start with a couple off the top of my head:

American History X (message about racism and hate)

Signs (message about things happening for a reason, faith, hope)

I can't believe I didn't mention The Straight Story already. Here is a family film which has real depth and meaning to it. There are so many worthy themes explored: redemption; self-discovery; forgiveness; pride; sacrifice. I think it is truly a gem compared to some of the dross spewed out by some of Hollywood's gliteratti. And in taking a marked departure from the freakshows he's normally associated with David Lynch has made possibly his best film.
