  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I think she was greatly over rated, but very good at marketing herself as a "brand."

I have a friend who was a missionary in India in the same district as Mother Teresa's "mission" and he did not have much good to say about her work. She took in millions of dollars in donations meant to help alleviate suffering, but he said he would often see so much pain and suffering inside her institutions, people laying in pain and not getting any treatment for their illnesses. He said he repeatedly asked the sisters why they didn't seem to help the suffering masses since they had so much money (in 1988, Mother Teresa's combined charities took in $170 million dollars), and he was repeatedly told that Mother Teresa taught that suffering cleanses the soul. She taught that to help end suffering was a grievous sin because it prolonged the person's time in purgatory. He said that he would sometimes take people who were lying on the dirty ground outside MT's "hospital" in his city and take them to a real hospital at his own expense, and that he did this especially when young children were involved.

I have read some of MT's writings and have concluded that she really did teach exactly that, that suffering shortens a person's time in purgatory and that one person's suffering can lighten the suffering of another person.

He said that MT herself travelled in a limo and hardly ever spent any time at the hospital and when she did show up, it was for photo ops, for about five seconds, then she got back in her limo and went to her next photo op.

I think of Mother Teresa as the coca cola of missionary work--a popular and desirable brand, but full of empty calories and not at all nourishing.

To think that she has an inspiring movie made about her--well, that's just part of her marketing package. Her marketing budget was in the millions every year, so it doesn't surprise me that she could make a slick and awesome biography for herself. :(

another popped balloon....

That's the trouble with putting mere humans in those balloons. They are just human and the balloon is destined to pop and crash to the ground.

Instead, lift Jesus up and he will uplift you!

It seems to me, menno, that you look everywhere for inspiration and spiritual fulfilment than the ONE place it should be.

Don't assume too much, but I do like to see inspiration from others too. Sometimes seeing someone "with skin" being Godly helps. Otherwise I would become some hermit thinking I only need Christ and no one else in the world, and that isn't what the church is about. I'm self-centered enough.

:sigh:

I'm sorry that you think the glitz and wow of the Mother Teresa image is inspiring.

I'll leave you to it, though, since you constantly seem to be looking for manmade things to satisfy your soul. :(

...just another of my failings as I flounder about. I visited with a widowed mennonite lady friend today talking over things of God and family. She reminds me of you:thumbsup: sometimes I wonder if she isn't you but Doris is 80+ y/o and won't use a computer--just her "mailstation" to send & recieve emails.

I did some googling about MT & it does seem that there is some smoke so I'll carry this over to OBOB for their take.

Wonder if they ever did a movie about Amy Carmichael? She would be worthy India missionary, right? http://www.intouch.org/myintouch/mighty/portraits/amy_carmichael_213673.html

What do you know--as you say, not the glitz, but there was someone there all along "with skin on".
