  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think Shaman King wins hands down, but I bet anything worst is too perveted or gory to read anyway.
What good can possibly come from this thread all it's going to do is get the freaks who think all anime is evil active on the board again.

I distinctly remember in the comic book someone said that buddha and Jesus were shamans. And later on I say a buch of other characters that blacken Christian heritage. But I never said all manga was evil, just the ones with the nun fetishes and vampires and...

Yeah that sounds very blashphemous I will agree with you on that. Most people on this board aren't aware of how bad manga and probably the tv show was in it's orginal form they just saw americanized version that was aired on network tv. There was one called Mouse Animated Lust at walmart it had a girl that couldn't have been more than 20 in skimpy french maid outfit don't that it was techincally "blashphemous" but based off the cover it was perv anime films which still makes it evil and close enough I figure.

I can't imagine most anime or manga is purposely blasphemous in a way that an American show such as SouthPark might be blasphemous. It seems there is a greater likelihood of just trying to integrate something Christian in and not understanding exactly what and why we believe. I haven't seen or read Shaman King so can't specificially comment on it.

Your right that they probably aren't trying to intentionaly offend us I read somewhere that about 10% of there population is Christian which means the people making the anime wouldn't probably understand our beliefs. Also there may be another reason they probably didn't even think about whether or not they would offend christians since in many cases the anime and manga if it was orginally created before it became really popular over here in the US at least stuff aimed at adults.

Generic any blasphemous other anime or manga that comes to mind?
Avarice and Monari if you don't likele reading post about different things Christian find blasphemous then here are two suggestion one don't enter threads that have the blasphemous or better yet why if you have a problem with Christians expressing opinions about things that they consider strong offensive against there faith go to secular forum this is after all a Christian forum.

Or I have a better idea, you can post these kinda of threads in the "christian only" section of the forums. Don't act so high and mighty like you own the place.

kthxbye.

The thing it comes down to here is culture shock, and people not liking to be confronted with something which they believe misrepresents them but to the people it was aimed at, could care less.

You even have that in Christianity itself, e.g. Catholics vs. Protestants and the misconceptions the two have of each other. You couple that with a type of medium intended for a demographic which is largely not Christian, the societal norms of Japan, and the same draw to use imagery to spice things up, and you're going to have problems, especially taking the fact that East Asian cultures have a very syncretic view of religion into consideration, and Christianity expunged that part of itself before 1000 AD. Heck, even Christians misrepresent other religions all the time, and yet it only seems to be a problem when the same thing happens to them. That's part of the reason I don't make sweeping false generalizations about others. I find out what they believe first, and as such, I'm not offended when I see Christianity 'misrepresented' in something like anime.

I mean, really, Shaman King is one of the least of these controversial series. If they really wanted to complain about something, there's always Doomed Megalopolis, especially the front cover.

Me personally, I could care less what other Christians consider 'blasphemous', because I don't look at just one isolated element. I look at the whole pie, and in the case of anime, that means where and who it was coming from and their intent. Of course, those things don't really cross my mind unless it just seems like they're begging for attention. Two of my favorite series are Hellsing and Neon Genesis Evangelion; if I was so caught up in the little things that Western audiences don't like, I would never have seen/read either of them, and I would have missed out on two really good series.

I havent isolated anything-or whatever you said-I hate hellsing as much as I hate the Blade Trilology, Bloodrayne (a comic adapatation anyway), and um, Casanova all of whom I haven't fully seen. If I fully listed all of Shaman Kings faults, then this would have been a forum to invite all the anti-anime/manga members to protest, wouldn't it. I'll leave any story or character discussions to stoptazmo. PLus, why shouldn't we complain about Manga's notoruous niche for innaccuaracy about every culture except itself?

I pretty much agree

I think it's just popular sometimes in japanese culture to mix in some christian symbols or themes to add to the atmosphere and make the story seem deeper. Some suggestives names and bible qoutes with no real intentions behind it is a great way to make things seem complex and apocalyptic.

(not a pun against NGE, I love that show). But parts of Xenosaga comes to mind (though without the story being finished it could be jumping to conclusions).

Shaman King I gave up on after one episode so I dunno how that series developed.

Actually they the do that with alot of religions including the main ones in Japan, the reason that Christianity is chosen is often times to give the show an edge especially if it falls in the same genre as a franchise like DBZ or Mobile Suite Gundam.
