Name: Morton Gregor Everhale
Nicknames: Spider, Houdini, Circus, Everhale, Hale, Harry, Gregor
Gender: Male
Age: 17 years and eight months
Appearance: 5'10", skinny and muscular, though one doesn't usually notice. Shaggy, chin-length brown hair that's usually pulled back into a short pigtail, brown eyes, showman's grin, one dimple on the right side of his mouth. Morton has long, almost gangly limbs, and long, slender fingers. He generally slouches about in the handmedowns Roberta passes out, his latest favorite pair being a pair of ripped jeans (numerous small and large holes), flip-flops, and a too-tight red t-shirt
Personality: Very friendly and a bit cocky. Morton is a hard worker and very protective of the young children, but occasionally lapses into looking out only for himself. He is sometimes quiet, not saying more than two words all day, and sometimes talkative, continually cracking jokes and telling stories. He enjoys eating apples while hanging upside down from a tree limb and reading about Africa and India. Previously described as a hard worker, which is true, he nevertheless hates working, especially if for Roberta. He hates being locked up and will do anything to escape. More than anything, Morton wants to run away and join the circus.
History: Morton Gregor Everhale was born to two circus performers, both members of a high wire and acrobatic act. All three performed for Uncle Horton's Tip-Top Circus, Morton as a small part of his parents' act. One terrible night, when Morton was seven, his parents were performing when his mother slipped from her perch. His father frantically grabbed for her and caught her, but slipped himself in trying to pull her up before the other members of the crew could help. Both died that night, with Morton watching from behind the curtain. Instead of allowing Morton to stay with his surrogate family, the circus, it forcibly removed him from the "freak show" and dumped him into Roberta Whipstaff's lap. From the very first night and many days and nights onward, Morton attempted to escape. After each attempt, Robert put up more obstacles and punished him more severely, but he continued to try. Several times he succeeded, only to be caught by suspicious neighbors or vigilant authorities. These escapes, along with his incredible flexibility and upper body strength, gained Morton most of his nicknames- Spider, Harry, Houdini, and Circus. The other three, Everhale, Hale and Gregor, variants of his name, are also used. In fact, no one except authority figures ever call Morton by his first name. As Morton passed into his seventeenth year, the escape attempts slowed. Every day, he marked off one square on his ratty calendar, counting the days to his eighteenth birthday.
