I'm new here... and this is the first thread I've started... so I hope it's a good one!

Anyways, I am nuts over Monopoly (Marvin the Martian too... but other than way too expensive Ebay items I've got just about everything Marvin I can find). It's a new 'addiction' and I only have 7 or 8 so far... but I see new themed ones everywhere and I can't seem to obtain them quick enough. There's even one that was banned recently that I want cause it is incredibly rare (not because it is crude in nature) and could eventually pay for my grandkids college tuition!

Anyways, I just wondered if I was alone... I've wondered all over the internet and I've never met another Monopoly nut like myself!

God Bless!

I wouldn't say I'm a Monopoly nut....though I do have regular Monopoly and Star Wars Monopoly....but that's mostly because I'm a Star Wars fan.

But I did want to comment that today in youth group, we had a parent come in to take over as my pastor (our usual leader) was on a spiritual day of renewal. And she brought "Dog-opoly" which was like a version of Monopoly that used dog breeds and stuff. What was really funny was it came with this ad for all sorts of other "opoly" games based off huge cities (like NYC, Houston, St. Louis) as well as colleges (Aggieopoly for example).

I couldn't imagine owning all the games the paper listed....but that's just me.

Nope, I haven't seen the Canadian version... and they have alot of really old monopolies like what you mention on ebay. Very few are in good collectable condition... and the hubby doesn't really want me on ebay (lol)... so I have yet to obtain any of those. It would be neat to have one of the originals tho.

The only monopoly games I like are the ones produced for the PC in Taiwan. They come with stuff that's not possible on a pure board game, like stock markets, stores where you can buy items (say, to control your dice roll, or to demolish buildings) and cards to do stuff (like avoid paying when you land on someone's place, or you could put them to sleep, or frame someone for murder [get into jail card], etc.). It also has vehicles that you can buy, letting you roll 1-3 dice. There are jails and hospitals, you can build your own research facility where at the highest level you can build nukes that can wipe out entire areas of buildings and land ownership and send anyone there to the hospital.

After playing that, normal monopoly just doesn't do it anymore for me.

Yeah, there are also minigames that you use to get tickets that you need to use to buy the items. Besides the research facility, you can also build resorts or airports, where the people who land there are stuck or flown away for several turns. Fun stuff.

Besides normal monopoly, they also do themes of games. Like they have ones based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and they also had one for the 2000 Taiwan Presidential Elections. You have to try to get not only money, but also votes, and campaign workers, which are needed to make "buildings" (well, campaign places). Landing on an opponent's space could make you lose your campaign money, or lose voters. One of the items you can buy is an eyedrop, which you can use in a hospital to make it look like you're crying on television, which makes your votes go up.

Have you ever played "Dirty Monopoly"?

In "Dirty Monopoly", the players will form "corporations" with other players and buy up entire chunks of properties on the board. As long as you own an entire color of properties, you can buy as many houses and hotels as you like, which merely multiplies the rent. For instance, owing Park Place and Boardwalk, and placing five hotels on Boardwalk will net you a nifty $10,000 if someone is unlucky enough to land on it.

One result is a form of hyper-inflation which occurs as more and more houses and hotels are built -- so that the $200 "salary" you receive for passing "Go" becomes essentially worthless.

The trick to winning is to form "corporations" with multiple players. The game becomes cut-throat as players make deals with other players, forming multiple corporations -- and then people start "doing in" the members of their corporation and thus becoming owner of all the property. It's sort of like "Enron", if "Enron" were a board game.

Of course, "Dirty Monopoly" breaks every rule in the book -- but it's great fun!

I love playing Monopoly against myself.
I used to dothat all the time. I was about 12 at the time which might explain the reasons behind it. These days I've got a neat little CD version that I got free in a pack of LCM bars. It's really good.
