OK, this may be the happiest news I've heard in a long time...

http://www.fashiongates.com/magazine/Modesty-Is-Back-in-Fashion-24-06-05-93041.html

Some people claim that the modesty might be the part of a larger social shift. Modern teens, who learned the lesson from the previous generations’ experience, do not want to lead the kind of life their older brothers and sisters did. Fashion shows called “Pure Fashion” are organized all over the US sponsored by Catholic clubs.

Of course the grain of salt points out that this claim was made going into last year, so it remains to be seen if this carries over. Count me among those crossing my fingers.

Good idea, because most of the clothes I have been seeing are way too skanky.

I like the quote in the article where they say jeans had gone about as low as they could, and shirts had gone about as high as they could... the only thing left was to swing back the other way.

I can't tell you how much those mid-riff baring tops bugged me. Not on all girls, but I saw way too many who either showed WAY too much, or had too much 'hanging over' for it to possibly be attractive.

Come to FL. You think you've seen skanky? You haven't seen anything. It would be nice if this were true. Women look much more beautiful in classy clothing than they do with their butt cracks showing.

Oh I know. I swoon over a pretty girl in a sweater and decent length skirt. Hawt!

OK, I said 'swoon' and 'hawt' in the same paragrah... might be time to quit.

Oh Chicago has it's share of skankiness. Whenever I go to the mall, I can't believe seeing these girls wearing clothes two times too small for them that actually go LOWER than they possibly could. I don't want to stare at anyones butt cracks, beautiful or not.

We're aren't dressing to solicit sex.

We're doing everything possible to keep cool.

What woman in her right mind would want to wear full sleeves, a full dress and pantyhose when it was 110 degrees outside?

And what man in his right mind would want to wear a suit when it was that hot, especially knowing that he was going to have to walk outside in 110 degree heat and sit in a car which was easily 150 degrees until the air conditioner kicked in?

We have two seasons here in Texas: summer and February. There is a reason why so many of us wear short sleeve cotton shirts and jeans. (They "breathe".)

No one is suggesting that women should wear burkas and be covered from head to toe. Nothing wrong with shorts and tee shirts or jeans....just don't wear jeans that go below your hip bones and would...without being too crass...show a bit more than is decent if certain grooming techniques weren't applied.

Umm, I dress like that (minus the pantyhose), and most people guess I'm sane (jury's still out on that one). Long, flowing robes keep the air circulating. I've lived in Egypt, in the desert, in the dead of the summer and kept relatively cool being fully covered. Tourists wearing tank tops and short shorts weren't any cooler than me in the searing heat. However, I didn't get sunburned.

Ah, you Texans! You're either telling us how awesome Texas is, or how horrible Texas is! ;)

Well, certainly that is true for some people and some areas. I wouldn't suggest that all people who dress like that are soliciting sex. However, I live in Madison, WI and I just moved from Chicago, IL and I have been seeing people dress like that in the dead of winter (and it has been very cold so far). So these people aren't trying to stay cool.

And anyway, if they want to solicit sex, I don't care. They can wear whatever they want to wear, I just personally think it's tacky.

Yaaaay Madison! On Wisconsin! Hooray for Cheeseheads!

The college population in general tends towards the skanky end of fashions. Even when I just wore a long sleeve t, jeans and a scarf, I felt over dressed going to class.

And its not just teens clothes.

I have to shop in just two stores now because the "mainstream" stores just have skanky clothes for women too. Its hard to find appropraite clothing that is "classic" and not all that mismatched, ugly new stuff that shouldnt be worn to work.

It was 86 degrees today (and yes, it IS winter!) and we're in the midst of (yet another) historic heat wave with near 90 predicted next week.

But dressing skimpily in Madison, WI at the end of December??? Brrrrrrrr...

(I saw some people swimming in Barton Springs and in the Blanco River this afternoon; and no, it is not supposed to be warm enough to swim at this time of year!)

I think there's a difference between dressing "sexy", and dressing to stay cool. There are clothes that cover well enough and still breath enough to keep you cool during hot weather. In fact, keeping the sun off of your skin directly helps to keep you cool, because the sweat doesn't evaporate as rapidly.

At any rate, I'm happy that a lot of women are starting to feel like dressing up like ladies again, rather than cheap hookers.

Oh, and I wanted to say I'm really sorry to see the fires raging in Texas and Oklahoma, with so many lives and homes lost. Our thoughts and prayers here in the Northwest are with everyone down there.
