  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm actually a fan of Shogun Rua personally.

I'm a big fan of Shogun, but I have a sneaking feeling that he's gonna get pancaked by this fella...

I used to be rather into such things.
But after reading In His Steps, I've started questioning the morality of violence in all forms. Even violence as a sport.

I once wanted to take Tae Kwon Do as a little kid. But my dad wouldn't allow it because he said it was un-Christian. At first, I was rather bitter at his words, but in the wisdom of my later years, I've come to understand his choice.

I'm into martial arts but I can still empathize with what you are saying here. I despise violence and haven't really fought another person since I was a kid in school. Most martial arts are not about aggression they are about mastering your own body and being able to survive physical conflicts that may be forced on you. I remember a story about a master ( I believe it was Gichin Funakoshi?) who was surrounded by a gang of 5 men. He tried to avoid conflict and pleaded with them but they attacked him. He ended up winning the fight against all five of them. When he told his students about it he looked despondent and they couldn't understand why because he just "won the fight". He told that he lost because he had to resort to violence.

In my style we teach that it is better to run then to hurt another person if you think you can escape in such a manner.

MMA is considerably less violent than the Bible, wherein the God-ordained practice of stoning people to death became a sport unto itself...

I've heard that story too. My style teaches a similar philosophy. The art of "fighting without fighting" is the best in my opinion.

What style do you practice? Mine is Cuong Nhu.
Others welcome to answer as well!

I trained in mma (boxing/kickboxing/submission wrestling) for a few years. It was a lot of fun, great exercise and even had quite of bit of Christian fellowship with others while there. Every once in a while we'd get someone in the ring who really had something to prove and was out to hurt someone else. Fortunately that was not very often and the instructor weeded them out. I think there's a difference in going real hard and trying to seriously injure someone else. Just like in football or boxing. You cn tell when someone is really trying to excel in the sport vs. trying to knock your head off. Injuries that are accidental are common such as broken noses and sprained ankles. It just happens and no one usually has bad feelings over it. It's just part of doing what you love.

I have to admit that I don't like all the trash talking on the televised mma. i don't think that's too Christian-like.

I love mixed martial arts. I have practised everything from Taekwondo to MMA. Nowadays, I'm to lazy but I watch almost every UFC and Strikeforce Event.

My favorite fighters are Wanderlei Silva, Fedor, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

I also hope that Crocrop puts on a clinic against Ben Rothwell...

Sorry, but I ran out of hope for Crocop after his last fight. He's clearly past his prime, mentally weak, and will probably finish his career like Ken Shamrock, ie, with a string of embarrassing consecutive losses on his record. Still, both are legends in their own right.

I know and I agree...it's just that my heart really wants him to make a another run for the title but my mind knows that it won't happen :(
