  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mitt Romney is not seeking reelection

Senator Romney has had a long and honorable career. At 76, he's earned the right to relax and enjoy his retirement. I wish him well in whatever lies ahead for him.

Wow, I didn't realize he was 76...Guess I just assumed he was still in his 60's.

I say to him "Bravo", he's had a great career, managed to keep his reputation in tact, remained scandal-free, and knows when it's time to exit the arena and go enjoy retirement.

Others should follow his lead on that one.

Good for him. Romney is genuine. Why can't we get one good candidate? We need people who could care less about the benefits that come with being POTUS. At this moment in time, maybe we'd be better off with no president. We should shake off the last vestiges of our love for monarchy.

It's a good time for him to retire, but I'll miss his sensible approach in the Senate. Now that I think about it, he's probably been my favorite senator for at least six years now. Wait, who are the ones from my state again? Eh. They're okay, I guess. Pretty liberal, though.

I respect Sen Romeny for not abandoning by his core convictions as so many of his Republican colleagues have done. Senators have an obligation to defend our country's insititutions, even when it may not be politcally popular to do so.

In an interview with the Washington Post, he said:
“I do believe that our institutions, while under constant barrage, are strong,” he said, “that our court system is strong and that, fundamentally, the American people stand by the Constitution and the constitutional norms.”

I hope he is right.

I watched a brief interview where he said it is time for the Boomers to step aside for the good of the country, and get some younger voices into politics.

Some of the things Mitt Romney is saying as he chooses not to seek reelection.

Warned Mitch McConnell of impending Jan6th violence, including storming of the capital.

“In case you have not heard this, I just got a call from Angus King, who said that he had spoken with a senior official at the Pentagon who reports that they are seeing very disturbing social media traffic regarding the protests planned on the 6th. There are calls to burn down your home, Mitch; to smuggle guns into DC, and to storm the Capitol. I hope that sufficient security plans are in place, but I am concerned that the instigator—the President—is the one who commands the reinforcements the DC and Capitol police might require.”
Like other world leaders, Republicans laughed at Trump behind his back

"One afternoon in March 2019, Trump paid a visit to the Senate Republicans’ weekly caucus lunch. He was in a buoyant mood—two days earlier, the Justice Department had announced that the much-anticipated report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller failed to establish collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election. As Romney later wrote in his journal, the president was met with a standing ovation fit for a conquering hero, and then launched into some rambling remarks. He talked about the so-called Russia hoax and relitigated the recent midterm elections and swung wildly from one tangent to another. He declared, somewhat implausibly, that the GOP would soon become “the party of health care.” The senators were respectful and attentive. As soon as Trump left, Romney recalled, the Republican caucus burst into laughter."
So you probably ask, why do they still support him? It's because they are afraid of his base. Both in light of being primaried, and being on the other end of threats and violence. As exampled below.

GOP congress wanted to impeach Trump, but choose not to because of MAGA violence pointed at them.
But after January 6, a new, more existential brand of cowardice had emerged. One Republican congressman confided to Romney that he wanted to vote for Trump’s second impeachment, but chose not to out of fear for his family’s safety. The congressman reasoned that Trump would be impeached by House Democrats with or without him—why put his wife and children at risk if it wouldn’t change the outcome? Later, during the Senate trial, Romney heard the same calculation while talking with a small group of Republican colleagues. When one senator, a member of leadership, said he was leaning toward voting to convict, the others urged him to reconsider. You can’t do that, Romney recalled someone saying. Think of your personal safety, said another. Think of your children. The senator eventually decided they were right.

Last week, the Atlantic published an excerpt of a forthcoming biography of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) in which the senator described his frustration at his colleagues during the Trump impeachment trials. In the first, on Ukraine, he claims, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told him that House prosecutors had “nailed” Trump, implying guilt. But McConnell later publicly called for the president’s acquittal. (McConnell told author McKay Coppins he didn’t remember this conversation.)

When Trump was impeached again, over the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Romney reports that Republicans declined to vote against Trump in part out of fear of the repercussions of doing so. One, he told Coppins, had “reasoned that Trump would be impeached by House Democrats with or without him — why put his wife and children at risk if it wouldn’t change the outcome?” Romney voted to convict, and then invested heavily in security.

Mitt’s a very smart and decent guy. And he’s a good speaker. If anyone remembers, he creamed Pres. Obama in their first Presidential debate back in 2012. The Republican party must purge itself of Donald Trump, and support rational and sensible conservatives like Mitt. Who’ll fight hard for their policies, but aren’t afflicted with a malignant personality disorder.

Yeah, I agree. When a strong conservative like Romney throws the party under the bus, people should, imho, take heed.
