  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Trump said that if elected he will build a wall along the Mexican border, and make the Mexicans pay for it. Not surprisingly, the Mexicans say they will not pay a cent for this.

My question is: Does Trump have a plan on how he will enforce his will on other nations? How will he make the Mexicans pay for a wall? In a similar vein: Other nations will not just sit back and do nothing if the US put trade sanctions and import tolls in order to bring jobs back to America. What will Trump do when European and Asian nations put restriction and tolls on imports from the US?

I could give more examples of how a decision by a US president cannot easily make decisions on behalf of other nations. I predict that this will lead to frustration. Will the US use military force to have their way - or how will they enforce their plans?

He has to use a carrot here as there is no stick. He cannot make Mexico pay unless he does a deal in the background for which they would be willing to pay the cost of losing face and cash and having 10 million people dumped on them. IN other words he has to give them more than the value of the wall and relocation costs of 10 million people to get it built. Starting a trade war with Mexico would not cost out and a real war is extremely unlikely - so where is the stick here?

This is racist and heartless nonsence from Trump.

He won't actually do it. In America, politicians lie to get elected. No one pays attention to them during their time in office because Americans just tend to be dumber about those things.

I'm still confused as to why they would want to. Like... where's the incentive?

If I were them I wouldn't pay any money for another country to build a creepy wall either.

If Trump is elected he will take the matter under advisement and will come to a different conclusion and plan, just as all other presidents before him have done on various campaign promises. The "wall" is Trump's "Guantanamo". (Note: I'm betting that Guantanamo will still be operating when Obama leaves office.) ;)

Yes, seeing as how an obstructionist congress won't let him close it...
The challenge in closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay is not actually the detention facility itself. The problem is the 166 detainees, each of whom has to be moved somewhere else. A basic premise of Gitmo, after all, was that these are people would be kept in perpetual limbo. Each detainee can leave that limbo through one of four different routes: a civilian trial, a military tribunal, a foreign country's prison system or freedom.

Sounds simple enough, right? Except that the first two routes – civilian trial or military tribunal – were blocked by Congress, which passed legislation barring the federal government from funding trials for Guantanamo detainees or buying a prison in the U.S. to house them.

Why hasn’t Obama closed Guantanamo Bay?

It will be bogged down in budgetary issues and regulatory matters and he'll blame Congress for it. Not to mention the world-class demonstrations on site.

An invasion of Mexico would not be a challenge for the US military machine.

It would be over very quickly. In fact, it might be described as a Blitzkrieg.

Once Mexico is ruled from Washington, they'll pay for the wall. Or they'll be sent to 'labour' camps.

We'll be liberators! It'll be great. We'll go to war with all the drug cartels. It'll be better than the Mexican-American War. It'll be great.

Maybe there's not enough funding left from maintaining Mexico's border with Guatemala.
