Name: Meredith Bryer
Gender: Female
Age: 42
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 103 pounds
Occupation: Governess/maid in the Sterling household.
Appearance: At just over five feet tall and barely weighing 100 pounds, Meredith is one of the most petite women one will ever meet. Though not a particularly homely woman, she can be considered quite plain. Her jaw is too square, her nose a bit too long, and her lips too thin. Her deep blue eyes are the only beauty she truly has, large and oval shaped with long eyelashes. Her hair is a dirty-blonde in color and is most often pulled back behind her head in a neat bun, further angulating her face.
Her clothes consist mainly of what she has dubbed "governess gray" dresses. Plain gray dresses in a simple cut, though sometimes with a white apron. For special occasions, she has a few dresses that differ in color, but she rarely wears them unless she is going somewhere or seeing someone important. She wears no jewelry, her only accessory the occasional coinpurse when she goes to town to buy things needed for the household.
Personality: To look at her, one might think Meredith is a strict, old, spinster of a governess, and some of that is true. While she isn't exactly old, and she can be strict at times, she is most definitely a spinster. As such, she had to make her own way in the world and became a governess at a young age. Since that time, she has helped to raise many children and it is their influence that made Meredith who she is today...a strange blend of education, discipline, fun, and fanciment. She is patient, understanding, and loving. She understands the importance of a child's education and discipline and makes certain to teach them and set a good example, both academically and morally. However, when lessons are over, Meredith encourages the children to play and develop their imaginations and artistic talents, even joining in on their play or making up games of her own at times. She finds it hard to maintain a professional distance from the children in her care and will most often develop a bond with them, even the entire family in whose employ she finds herself. And it is because of this bond that her protective side comes out. Though some might expect, from her appearance, that she is a rather shy, mousy woman, the opposite is true. She speaks her mind when appropriate and can become very vocal very quickly if there is some injustice or wrong being done, her shouting loud enough to go up against anyone; and indeed, it's a funny thing when she does, as it seems hardly possible so much fire can come from someone so small.
Background: Born the youngest daughter of five children to a financially bankrupt lord and lady, Meredith spent her childhood and teenage years listening to her mother and father complain about their money being gone and then going out among the other noble men and ladies and pretending there were no financial problems at all. That was the way her parents had taught her. They may be bankrupt, but if they pretended they weren't, then perhaps they could marry off their sons and daughters to rich spouses and be taken care of. Unfortunately for Meredith, she had not been born particularly attractive like her three older sisters, and even they had a difficult time getting married off simply because they had next to nothing for a dowry. Meredith's only other sibling, an older brother, joined the church instead of getting married. So when it came time for Meredith to marry or find a means of supporting herself, it soon became clear her only choice was the latter.
Accepting it rather than trying to fight against it, after she turned eighteen, Meredith immediately looked for work as a governess, having just the right education for it. Over the years, she has cared for, educated, and helped to raise dozens of children. Each household was a new adventure, though they weren't always good. While she had a certain amount of control over the children, the parents and their guests and friends were free to go about doing as they pleased and there were times when Meredith was treated very badly. But Meredith always stayed for the children. She wouldn't leave unless the parents terminated her services, not wanting to quit a job and abandon any of the children. Only one exception has occurred in her lifetime and that was when she was twice nearly raped by her drunken employer at the time and, for her safety, she left. She has always regretted this, however, and wishes to this day she could have been there for the children in that household, wondering what became of them through the years.
Currently, she works as a governess for Jacqueline Sterling, helping her around the house and then also with the children. She had been looking for work seven months ago and had heard of the position at Jacqueline's estate. She almost didn't take the job, however, due to the fact that Jacqueline really couldn't pay very much for her help. Still, Meredith went to meet with the young mother and when she did, discovering the circumstances around Jacqueline's need for a governess, she knew immediately that this was where she needed to be, bad pay or not. The two women became friends almost at once and Meredith fell in love with the children.
